I'm looking to replace the tuner knobs on my 1867 Legend made in 2002, but I don't know if they are made by Ping or Schaller. Is there any way to tell? Will the same tuner knobs work on both?

I want to replace the stock gold ones with pearloid ones. I see StewMac has some that might work - http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Tuner_parts/Schaller_Replacement... - though hopefully I can reuse the existing gold screw since they come with a silver screw.

Well, my 05C has Pings, but I no longer have my 1768 which had schallers, to compare the two. I could post a photo of the pings if that would help...

I found a link that has pictures of each:

It looks like my guitar has Ping tuners.

I think Ping and Schaller take the same buttons. It's Gotoh and Grover that are different. You better double check UTFSB but for some reason this rings a bell.

Are there any other brands that make mother of pearl buttons?
I wonder if the original buttons on the Custom Legends are of similar quality than the buttons from Stewmac?
Anyone knows about the different perloid buttons?

I've bought some of the pearloid buttons from Stew-Mac and fit them onto Ping tuners with no issues. The were virtually identical to the buttons that came on the Custom Legend and The Book.

If you want to really knock yourself out, you should check out the real MOP buttons that Paul Templeman carries. There is no comparison with the plastic buttons ... the feel and look are simply phenomenal. They are pricey but oh so worth it if you have a good guitar and want the best.

I received the buttons from StewMac today but they were the wrong size. I read some threads that recommended the small ones, part # 3056, but they are too small and the screw is then too long, so it seems that actually the large ones, part # 3057 are the correct ones. I was originally thinking the large ones looked right until I came across threads recommending the other ones :-(

I guess it's time to find out how good StewMac's return policy is.

Does anyone has a set of the real solid mother of pearl buttons. (Large size), please send me a PM.
Paul does not have them available at this time, they are in production.
Thanks

I'm hanging on to mine. But they're worth the wait, Hector. If you want, maybe we can connect and you can check them out and maybe even borrow mine while you're waiting for Paul to get the production complete.

Bobbo-Good advice, it will be worth to wait. But definitely one of these days would like to see them.
Thanks.

Sorry to wake this old thread up but I just wanted a confirmation. I'm sure I've contacted Stewmac before and was told these Schaller pearloid buttons don't fit on Ping, but it seems they do from this thread. Could someone confirm if they fit please? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your input. Did you try the same buttons from StewMac on Ping?

I have tried the Stew-Mac pearloid buttons on some Ping tuners on a 2000C. They fit on fine and looked great, and I had them on there for a while, but they started slipping and I eventually took them off and put the original buttons back on.

I've also tried to Change Ping's with Schaller's (on my 2009C) and they do not fit!! In the other direction it will work but with a lot of dead gear.
On most of my guitars I swapped the crappy Ping's with Schaller's "Vintage M6". They are 16:1 Ratio and the Gold plating is thick and nice, even after 15 years of use. The Gold plating was nearly gone after 5 times of Tuning the guitar on my 2010C.
I found some very Special Buttons on this site:

http://www.crazyparts.de/mode/schallerm6/index.php

They are really not cheap, but in Person they are looking incredible...

Thanks for your replies!

If you change them to Schaller, then I guess new screw holes would need to be drilled? I've once been given a part number for pearloid/gold tuner by Ovation/Fender, which is 5550075336 M/HDS - 6 STR GOLD/PEARL SCREW, but I wonder if they just supply the buttons. The quoted price for them was £102.25 (approx. $160, which is quite a lot!!).

Ok, there was a bit of "missunderstanding"! I ment to Change the Buttons from Schaller to Ping. If you Change the complete tuner it will not be a big Problem if the mounting screw is in the same Position.

Oh no, there was no misunderstanding. I was asking about changing just the buttons. But I mentioned the screw holes just in case I needed to change the whole tuners if I couldn't find the correct buttons.

BTW, you have a fantastic collection of Ovations there!
