Location: WV | Hi all. I just joined and wanted to introduce myself. I have always wanted an Ovation and found a deal on ebay. Last night I bought a new w/o tags CC057 (black) for $125. The seller was relatively new and I hope the guitar is as described. Anyway, I was looking around for a case and was wondering what you guys would recommend. I thought about the new Lightweight foam and ballistic nylon cases from TKL, Gator and SKB. Also looked at the Ovation case #8117 from either Music 123 or Musicians Friend. I don't believe in gig bags. Might just as well wrap it in a bath towel. Also any advice on strings, etc. would be appreciated. I am partial to Elixir .12-.53's on my other guitars. Anyway I'm anxious to get the guitar and will post a follow up when it arrives.
Later,

You got a good deal on the guitar. I had one some time ago and it sounds very nice plugged in. Don't automatically dismiss gig bags. I bought a really heavy duty padded one for $35 and I use it for my Custom Legend. Ovations are very sturdy. A well padded gig bag is a whole lot lighter and easier to handle than a hard case and will protect the guitar just fine.
As far a strings go, I like the Elixir Nanoweb Custom Lights (.011 - .052). They're somewhat hard to find in the local shops, but on-line stores such as Musicians Friend and Music123 always have them in stock. I have them on all three of my 6-string Ovations, including a shallow body Balladeer and they work very well. |

Location: WV | You're right about gig bags. I had forgoten that I have a similar gig bag (well padded and cost about the same $35) that I keep an old Jasmine in when I'm not fooling around with it. I still prefer a hard case though. The more I look the more I like the foam-nylon hybrids. I just wonder how they hold up? I may just stick with the Ovation 8117 hard case. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Location: Germantown, MD | Gig bags are fine for short trips when the guitar isn't going to be surrounded by a lot of other stuff and will be visible to you. When I'm going to my partner's house (about 30 miles), the guitar rides in a gig bag on the back seat. If we're going to the beach for a few days and we're packed like we're going away for a year, the Ovation HSC makes more sense. And I'd go with the Ovation case.
Strings: I just restrung with Elixer Nanowebs. The sound is incredible, the feel is great. My local music store sometimes has two sets of strings for the price of one, which makes the outlay a bit easier to take.
Peace,
John |
