I just purchase a used guitar. (sorry inferior brand) the twelve string was strung with the heavy strings first or toward the face of the player. My ovations are just the opposite, thinner string first. This seems more natural. Are there two ways of doing this or is my used guitar confused

Rickenbacker's are strung like that, but I thought they were the only one's.
I suppose you could do any 12 string like that if the nut was cut for it.

Hitting the heavy strings first gives the guitar a slightly different jingle jangle. If it plays well I would keep it strung that way for a change of pace from the Ovation style 12s.

Hey if it plays well and you like the sound use the John Lennon approach and "Let It Be". Speaking of John did you all know that in the late sixties he and George sanded all the finish off of their guitars. I think they were Epiphone Casino's. Their reasoning was it gave the instruments more resonance and sustain. Maybe it worked. Or maybe they got into some good acid. I guess the point is that just because it came from the factory that way doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Otherwise we would all still be playing lutes and dulcimers!

Oh and by the way-My Dean 12 is also set up with the heavier or lower octave strings toward the face or top of a right hand guitar.

Just for the record the inferior brand was a Yairi DY-87 I thought that the Japanese were seeing things in reverse, but I guess as usually there are many different ways to look at thinks. It does seem ackward for me both to finger and strum. Maybe I need to give it a chance.

I've never seen an acoustic 12 string strung Ric style, though there are a lot of 12's I've never seen. The Hamer Newport 12 is strung reverse, too. BTW, Let It Be was Paul. Lennon also sanded off the finish of his J-160 to "open it up". Of course, he then drew pics of him and Yoko on it for the Montreal Bed-in. :)

I know of several guys that have strung "reverse" on Martin and Ovation...usually, they go back. Did it myself on a 1658 CL...different and interesting but not necessarily an improvement.

The Newport 12 that I got from George is "reverse." Maybe I'll try it with the Preacher when I change the strings (usually wait until they start to rust.)

I was thinking about going octave treble with the D12 but the bridge saddles aren't swapable and the grooves are deeper cut for the main strig.

I would love an A/B comparison on sound!

W2's Baritone Adamas 12 is octave down as well.

I told you this was a stupid post. Well I really looked at my guitar and the person before me reverse the strings from where they were supposed to be so it really is "normal". Why it was hard for me to finger is that the larger string didn't fit down into the smaller grove but road on top. Thus it was so much above the smaller string it was arkward to press down. How does someone gracefully say nevermind.

No Crusty.

It was Emily Latella, a.k.a., Roseanne Roseannadan, or the late and missed Gilda Radner.

She would go off on commentary about Soviet Jewelry and such.

Later it was Dana Carvey as the Church Lady - "Well isn't that special!".

"Who made you say that? Could it be... Satan?" :D

At least I had the right show. :) SNL was never the same after the Belushi-Akroyd-Curtain-Newman-Radner-Murray era. The Dennis Miller period was good, but it just didn't quite get there. Anymore I don't find it very funny at all...except Celebrity Jeopardy...so maybe I'm just old.
