Location: Melbourne Australia | I caught up with a couple of mates (Greg & Pete) last night to have a bit of a jam. Both gents have played guitars and been in bands going back over 30 years whilst I am a relative newbie.
Greg introduced me to his Ovations (he has a beaut old deep bowl that sings deep and loud and a shallow bowl) about 3 years ago that got me into picking up a guitar, learning to play and purchasing my first guitar, a 1621 Balladeer.
Anyway, his son now has these on semi-permanent loan and he has a Taylor 610CE and Taylor 335CE 12 string. Last night I rocked up with Pete and brought along my 07 Collectors and 6756LX 12 string.
Greg played the Ovations most of the night before passing the folowing comments:-
* I had bagged myself a bargain on both fronts and were both very playable.
* He wouldn't jump to sell his Taylors and replace them with the Ovations even at the reasonable prices I was able to find them for.
* Wasn't it funny how he was initially a big fan but now I have taken over from him.
* Commented that the contoured bowl was turning it into more of a 'normal' wooden shape and what happened to the bowl shape that was supposed to work so well.
Pete was the unbiased observer who brought his dobro along and tended to favour my Ovations. He said:-
* While the Taylor Jumbo 12 had more bass the 6756LX had a sweeter sound across the entire range.
* Loved the inbuilt tuner and asked why every guitar doesn't have one.
* Felt the Ovation 12 felt like a 'normal' guitar - not a big jumbo.
* He also enjoyed playing the Collectors and liked the style and Bear Claw Spruce top.
* Was surprised how heavy it was and was disappointed they didn't smell of wood (maybe I should get a wood scented ordouriser for them.
Anyway it was an interesting night with some music, red wine, cheese, lots of guitars and talk of boats. |

Location: CA | Kinda off topic, but I stopped into the GC the other day to buy strings and of course had to see what they had in the acoustic room. Usual Celebs as far as Ovations, but I always like to plunk the competition, and there's nowhere else I'd get to play $2K guitars. At any rate, they had a new Martin A/E dreadnaught in there that - I'm not kidding - is the best-sounding guitar I have EVER played. Wow, what a ring. Unbelievable - and at $2,800, unattainable. Went by a few days later and it was already gone.
But the new strings made the 'lusty red' 1778T sound even lustier. It was kinda like seeing Shania Twain nekked and then going home and jumping the missus. |

That smelly wood body leaves an aftertaste.
But it burns even better with the greese soaked in it.
I could eat chips out of an Ovation all night long..

right now That will sell just as well as my new product, Jet Fuel Aroma car deoderizer. Just hang the little cardboard airplane from your mirror and your car will smell just like Jet A! For all the wannabe fighter pilots out there. |

Location: Round Rock, TX | I've played a lot of friends' Taylors and I've yet to play one that made me want to get one. Their 12-strings are the easiest to play that I have ever held, but not so much easier that I'm willing to deal with the (IMO) lesser sound. I would take my 6756LX over any Taylor 12, as far as sound goes. And that's unplugged. Plugged in, my O's (and your O's, too for that matter) just slaughter that unfortunate Expression system.
Now, I have played several Martins that I liked more than a little, but it was Larrivee that got me finally to pull the trigger on an all wood guitar - twice. |

and braced yourself to blown away.....
Then heard the music and went.....its nice.
You were not blown away as hipe had you thinking.
Taylor are OK sound good playing but they
kinda bland sounding.
I like Martin standard series and above.
I also like Westerly made Guilds.
I own one of each.
I own 6 Ovations and just bought 2 Adamas
guitars. |

Location: Simi Valley, CA | Taylors are like when you heard about Traveling Wilburys.......... You heard who was in the group and braced yourself to blown away..... I had an Ovation 1121 (recently gave it to my daughter) that I bought while in college. My wife gave me an Ovation 12 string about 10 yrs ago for Xmas. A friend introduced me to Taylors with his 514CE (cedar top) and I liked it A LOT!!! I spent a couple of hours in music store's acoustic room with a wall full of Taylors. I kept coming back to the 810 (dreadnought). So, I ordered an 810CE with Brazilian redwood back and sides (a limited edition that year). As much as I love my Ovations, this Taylor is sweet - easy to play, sounds great and smells delicious (don't know how they get that vanilla smell).
BTW, I LOVE THE WILBURYS TOO!!!! I just recently listened to the whole (first) album on my iPhone on a plane trip home. Even my kids (in their 20s now) have fond memories of road trips singing along to the Wilburys. |
