Interesting when you research the song Wooden Ships on who got credit for the songwriting of it.Kantner was not listed because of legal issues?
I think that both versions are done incredibly well but I have to give into the Rock version by Jefferson Airplane as my favorite. The ripping lead guitar on their version wins my vote.
Which one do you prefer.GWB

I have had both these versions in my library since they came out and have loved them both, but I prefer the feel and the execution of the CSN version. The blend of the voices and the cool organ work, plus the lead guitars trading back and forth make this the go-to version for me.

Even though I'm a Bay Area raised dude, I'll go with CSN.

Besides, I disowned Jefferson (Insert vehicle here) after they released "We Built This City" which is in my mind, and I've said it here before, THE WORST rock and roll tune ever.

It actually bothers me that I use the same amp as Craig Chaquito Bananas did on that song.

Yeah, I gotta go with CSN...
The Airplane was more fun on stage (in the day) but CSN did a cleaner version.

And Damon, I do not believe that the Jefferson Airplane and the Starship (No Jefferson) are the same animal.

Now, if you run into the KBC Band, Kantner, Balin & Cassidy... They are worth a listen.
(If the old farts are still touring)

I didnt' know that about "Starship". When I saw them (1978 maybe) they were called Jefferson Starship (that is what the concert tickets said) and they still had Balin, Kantner, and Slick together on stage. It was great because it was only the second show of the tour and they played for 3 hours, every song from 3 or 4 albums, old and new. But, obviously, that was well before the release of "Built This City"......

I have to vote for the CSN version, but live in concert I was not disappointed to hear Starship play the song. Just a few months later I saw CSN live, which included the same song. I didn't like it as much as the record because they did it "unplugged". Great vocals, though.

CSN.

But I also like the live version that opens "Stephen Stills Live"(1974).
In-Your-Face Hammond B-3 and some kick-ass solos on a Gibson Firebird . . .

I like both, but if forced to choose I'll take the CSN version.

Gotta agree with alpep's comment on Marty & Grace's voices. I wanna Ride the Tiger!

Although there are some things worth listening to by the Airplane, I felt that they were a sloppy band on stage. Also Jorma and Jack Cassidy were miss-casted in that band. They took off with Hot Tuna. "We built this city" silly crap. That ruined it for me. CSNY gets my vote.

I always thought that although she had the cute hippie-chick thing going, Grace Slick had at best an average karioke voice. I think she gets a pass because she was one of the "pioneer" women of rock.

I'd rather listen to Grace than Janis any day. When Balin chimed in they were as good as any duo, Harris and Parsons, Don and Phil included. Love the original airplane. Fantastic live. And the forgotten man - Spencer Dryden was probably the best of all the west coast drummers.

Ignore them al, they're Archies fans.

Marty and Grace together was nothing but pure magic.

Marty started the airplane with Paul kantner thier original singer Signe Anderson left when she got preggers and they took on Grace from the Great society who brough along the tune white rabbit. early JA also borrowed songs from dino valenti of quicksilver messenger service.

Marty and Grace always fought it was Marty's band but Grace being the hot chick model at the time took it over and the focus went to her but Marty's voice is really the distinctive male vocal in the early years.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-pQCzQ0oCo

yes I agree the last starship without Paul Kantner was horrible but to dismiss startship on just one tune is absolutely wrong. Paul's original vision was to take the airplane past where it was and go further without jack and jorma and he did if you get the early lp's where it was just a solo project and then stuff like red octopus it was stellar.

but I digress

Grace a karaoke singer? are you F******G kidding me? does Pete just do windmills? is roger just a screamer? can entwhistle hold down the bottom? can moon play a straight 4/4 beat????????/

I would put up ANY and I mean ANY 60's era female singer against the dreck we have today. Janis, Grace, joni mitchell, joan baez, sandy denny, molly prior, etc etc etc against britney spears, the lohans, etc etc etc the only one that really can sing is myriah carey and well, I don't listen too much to her voice......

Grace was not only hot in the day but the personification of Hippie chick. yes she drank too much, yes she did too much acid, yes she wanted to take abbie hoffman as her date to trish nixon's wedding (jury is still out on if that would have been a bad or good thing) but to cast her as a bad karaoke singer is just ignorant.

I bought volunteers when it first came out, took it home put it on the turntable and was blown away and confused by the inclusion of wooden ships. I did not know that whole interconnection of all the CA musicans at the time. I remember thinking how Kantner took it to a whole different level. Yes the csn version was sweet and pretty but the blending of the voices and jorman's guitar along with jack's solo bass playing is just pure magic. to this day the harmonies on "keep us both alive" send s chill down my spine.

DON"T MESS WITH GRACE

be forewarned

Me thinks me struck a nerve....

I can't remember when we last got a post that long from Al.

Let's not go into today's women(?) singers.
IMHO, Grace does not measure up to her peers during that golden era.

You are correct... I did not listen to your links... YET.
Lunch time is about an hour away. I plan on doing my due dilegence & give it a listen then.

You know Al that this all boils down to a matter of personal taste but because I respect your view I'll re-visit some Grace stuff and see if my current opinion holds true.

I am FIRMLY BEHIND Al on this one.

Grace Slick was the DEFINITIVE female voice of the era.

I remember a few years later that Ann Wilson considered it HIGH PRAISE that she was being compared to Grace Slick.

I went to one concert where Heart opened for the Airplane/Starship (can't remember) and remember leaving the venue thinking I had probably just heard the two most powerful women singers in rock of all time.

I still believe that. Both were good on record but were AMAZING in their power and tone when heard live!
