Made my first ever trip to the Guitar Center in Milwaukee yesterday. Wow! Very impressive inventory. I spent most of my time playing all the Ovations, 1777-LX, 1778-LX, 6778-LX, and even tried some $2,500 Taylors and Martins.

Overall, my favorites were the 1777-LX and a D-15 Martin that had just come in the day before(probably cause it had the newest strings). I asked the kid how much they would charge to put a pick-up in the Martin and he said "We don't do that sort of thing. We'd be glad to sell you a Fishman pick-up but you will need to find a Luthier to do the install." I asked him if they had a tech on staff to do setups and he said no, they pretty much sell them as they come out of the box.

I wasn't sure what the difference between the 1778-LX and the 6778-LX was and neither did they except that one was $100 more than the other (realized one was rosewood and one was Ebony). I asked to see an Ovation Cataloge and they didn't have one.

Finally, the guy says.."I lknow what you would like" and proceeds to hook up a Line 6 Variax to a Bose PA. The PA sounded great, not so much the Line 6. I guess he thinks that If I like "plastic" guitars, Id like the Line 6?.

Anyway, interesting trip.

Hi Willard,

The principal differences between 1778 lx and 6778 lx :
- The wood top (Sitka AA vs Sitka)
- The fretboard (ebony vs rosewood)
- Gold machines vs chrome
- 100 $ more...

Follow this link to see the great catalog printed in 2004 by Music Meyer (the official German distributor).
It's in German but I'm sure that our friend "Kidschool" will be glad to make a translation if needed.
The photos are really nice...

And don't forget that the 1778 has the gloss neck - the 6778 has a satin neck. Two flavors, both great guitars!

WorshipLeader;
Have you been to the new Robbie's Music in BuddLake? Evidently, they shut down their Newark operation and relocated it there. My partner was recently there and told me about it. Having lived in NWJersey, I know there's not a helluva lot of options around when it comes to music stores. . . .

Just thought I'd pass along the info . .

Cliff:

Haven't been there yet, although its only about 4 miles from my home. Given my experience with music stores out here, away from the major met area, I'd be thrilled if they have ANY US made guitar, or any guitar priced over $549.99 hanging on the wall. Who knows, I may be pleasantly surprised. I'll let you know next week - I need a set of black Dunlop Straplocs for a new strap I just got.

Thanks for the heads up and reminder to stop by!
