If you liked Zonner's story, check this one out...

There was a car wreck on a busy highway, and one of the drivers suffered a severed arm. Another car pulls up behind and someone jumps out, grabs the arm, and speeds away. He was later caught by the fuzz and charged with...

arm robbery!

PS... I am truly sorry to anyone who took the time to read that.

I had to log in and give them personal details I wouldn't give my wife - and when I searched Converse they had no knowledge of you. When I googled you a few weeks ago all I got was the ex-services site. Are you absolutely sure that Converse exists? Am I in line to become an Honorary Citizen of a ghost town?

Here's the story:

Masked man has bad day at bank
Web Posted: 04/09/2005 12:00 AM CDT

Vianna Davila
Express-News Staff Writer

Hugh Douglas Dentler's bad day began when he arrived at a Converse bank wearing a black mask and discovered the building's doors were bolted shut by a security system.

But the day only got worse when bank employees — who saw a man in the black mask trying to open the door — refused to buzz him inside.

They watched a frustrated Dentler walk off and climb into a pickup, in full view of a security camera.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. Monday at the TexStar Bank on the 9100 block of FM 78.

Dentler's crumbling luck continued when Converse police officers arrived at the bank and he fled, driving into an area teeming with police officers in the middle of a shift change and patrolling nearby Judson High School.

Things went even further south when Dentler turned into a dead end.

His hopes for escape ended completely when he abandoned the pickup, ran through the woods into a new subdivision — and came face to face with an officer.

"There were officers at Judson High School, there were officers behind him, there were officers in front of him," said Converse Lt. Allen James.

"He picked the worst time of the day to do it."

And now the FBI is on the case, trying to determine if Dentler is tied to four robberies in and around San Antonio.

Dentler, 40, is being held without bail on a federal charge of attempted bank robbery, said Gary Brown, assistant chief deputy with the U.S. Marshals Office in San Antonio.

He also faces two state charges, for attempted robbery and evading arrest.

Among the bank robberies that authorities are trying to link him to include a successful holdup at the Guaranty Bank in Windcrest on March 25 by a man wearing a black stocking over his head and carrying a beige purse, according to Windcrest Police Chief Lori Harris.

In each of the other robberies, the suspect wore a black mask that looked like a woman's stocking and carried a black handgun.

However, investigators didn't find a weapon in the Converse incident. Dentler never showed a weapon at the bank, James said.

Police Chief Rick Jamison said the incident was the closest thing to a Converse bank robbery in his 26-year career.

"This was downhill from the start for him," James added.
