Is it my imagination, or are the 3 cases being offered getting closer to each other in quality? I have a 9158 which came with my '02 CL12...high quality TKL. Several years ago, I had a guitar with an 8158. This case was a pc of crap...brittle, crack-prone shell...cheesie interior. Now I have a STD Elite LX that came with an 8158...TKL, almost identical to my 9158 except that the interior shape doesn't hold the mid-bowl as precisely. Then there's the low-end case shaped like a guitar (LoJoe just sold his Baladeer LX with this case). This looks like a fine case...to my eye probably no lower in quality than the 9158. We all want great protection for our USA O's and to me it doesn't look like it makes any difference which case you get. John <>{

John:

I'm no expert on O cases, except to say that I like the feel and apparent quality of the 9158 (TKL) case alot as opposed to the 8158. I've owned both the 9158 and 8158 - both are made by TKL. The case that is shaped like a guitar I believe in an 8210 (mid-bowl) and I think is made by SKB. I like the TKL shaped cases the best.

Anyway, regarding your observation about the quality differences in the cases, just look at what musicians friend is selling them for. The two TKL cases differ in retail price by $50, but the friend sells them both for the same price - $99. The SKB case sells for $89. Maybe they all do offer the same protection, just in different flavors. Personally, I think the 8158 feels like a piece of junk compared to the 9158. My $99 goes to the 9158.

I had an 8158 from a few years ago, and I would agree that it was junk. It looks like since the intro of the LX's the 8158 is a totally different case. It doesn't have the hole for the long trussrod wrench(not needed anymore w/new trussrods), and it seems like the depth is better suited to a deep bowl. The 9158 fits both mid and deep well...it just squishes the deep bowl a little more. I don't like my mid bowl in the 8158: the bowl sits down into the case and the headstock tilts up in the air. But the materials seem equal to the better case. It does seem silly to offer 3 cases at almost the same pricepoint.

I just found out somthing cool about the 9158. They included a place to keep an your truss rod wrench or something in the corner of the storage box. Check it out. In the back corner near the hinge of the lid, there is plastic pipe sticking out of the fuzz. I put my TR wrench in it (short side in the pipe) and it lays perfectly along the top edge of the box.

Cool huh?

I don't know which case came with my 05 Collectors but I don't like it.

The case that came with my 2000 S771 has more room.

The new case has practically no room under the headstock and the storage compartment is smaller. Plus the guitar barely fits in the case without pushing the lid hard down.

The one other thing I liked about the older Ovation case was I could keep a strap on and lay it over the strings and I can close the case.

The new one I can't and there is no room in the pocket or under the headstock to put it. It just barely fits rolled up in the spot where the body meets the neck on the lower bout.

A real PIA with a case that won't even hold a strap. My S771 case will hold a strap in the compartment and my TKL Gibson case has tons and tons and tons of room.

AAAAAAARGGH!

I think the new ones are designed with Protection being the ultimate primary function over convenience. Perhaps a small gig bag is in order . . .

I dunno my model numbers, but have had several different Ovation cases. I am not pleased with the newer ones.

The one that originally came with my Adamas MEII1598 last October I needed to return. It did not fit the guitar well at all...in fact, the guitar see-sawed at the neck within the case, and overall held the guitar loosely. The case from my older Adamas 1598 held the guitars firmly and properly, and just had a more sturdy feel to the outer material. They sent me a replacement when the guitar came back, but doesn't fit the guitar all the much better. Real bummer.

Here's a question...
Are the cases covered by the warranty? I got a case with my Elite 1778T that's giving me some trouble. I don't like the way the guitar fits, and it's kind of hard to close. Would Ovation replace it?

My MEWP (now discontinued) came with a case built like a tank. To me, who's used to carrying my axes around in gig bags, it weighed a ton, but Cliff is right, if your objective is to protect your guitar the 9158 is the way to go, and don't waste your time with the others. I wouldn't compromise on the protection. What I do is I use the 9158 when the guitar is in the house, and when I travel on my bike I use a gigbag. For a gigbag, get either a travelite case, or one of Paul T's deals. They have backpack straps and are great for biking around brooklyn and downtown.
During the winter the 9158 holds a hygrometer and small humidifier in the headstock area. In the the cutout area, I put my strap. And in the storage compartment, there's more than enough room to keep extra strings, a multitool, the original hang tag stuff, a chamois and a six foot cable. There's some room to spare, but why would you want to store more? Buy a gigbag.

jyam4, I've restored old cases. If you can't get it back under the warranty, do a search on how to restore a case. If you work in Brooklyn, you can stop by my office and I'll show you how I fixed an old martin case, that's now guaranteed (by me to me!) to keep out rain.

I would love to obtain an OHSC for my Deacon 12 string. I am currently using a Bass Coffin case.

Thanks for the offer. I might just take you up on it. I'm going to call the factory in August and see what they suggest. I'll let you know what they say.
Thanks;
Joe

Joe,
Keep me posted.
I've fixed up three cases, one of them an ovation. They're watertight.
