With a ukulele your hands are big enough, your fingers stretch far enough, there is enough space between the strings. You have more fingers than there are strings, and you don't fear hitting a wrong string that doesn't belong with a chord. They aren't heavy, and you don't have to reach way around to play them. Ukuleles aren't status symbols and you don't have to measure up to anyone to have fun with them. Ukuleles take all the fun elements a guitar has to offer, but throws out all the complexities and frustrations that cause so many guitars to gather dust in the closet. My guitars look at me and say "how shall I frustrate thee today"...my ukulele looks at me and says "lets have some fun".

". . Everybody should have and play a "uke". It's so simple to carry with you, and it's one instrument you can't play and not laugh . . ."

The most appealing thing about ukes is their 'contrarian' nature. How many guitarists will readily admit to not only owning and playing but actually *enjoying* a uke? Hrmm? Well, other than the demonstrably imbalanced guitarists, such as myself, that is. ;)

Go on then..purely ouy of curiousity you understand, not that I would ever consider buying one, but how much do you need to pay to gat a good basic uke?

And crusty - Steve Cropper was in town last night with Booker T and the boys and they got great reviews. The London Evening Standard said Steve was "a rhythm guitarist with attitude and a lead guitarist with altitude". They had Eddie Floyd and William Bell singing with them.

Schroeder, My company sells Ukes from around £20 to several hundred pounds. Our basic Pineapple Soprano uke at £30 is fine. We have a solid cedar topped soprano at £45. Both sound and play really well. If you want something a little classier a basic Martin or not so basic Larrivee will cost you about a grand.

I have your website noted.

BTW - Basic £30-£45, a "little classier" £1000 ? I think I spot a hole in the market.

Basic is just fine - NOt that I would even think of buying one. (How much for a George Formby signature model?)

Think you're laughing now...

Just wait till we hear that Schroerder's touring the UK as it's fist Fast Jazz Solo Uke act.

Alvin and the Chipmonks come to mind.

I hear there's a place in Front Royal (what kind of a name is that anyway?) desperate for acts. It's been a long time since Tiny Tim took the world by storm, there's always a market for novelty acts. I figured a uke and bongos duo would fit the bill a treat. We can split it straight down the middle, 80/20.

But only if I ever bought one, which obviously I wouldn't.

This tarpon thing. Is it the winter version of tarpoff, and is it related to pick-up trucks?

"Front Royal"

Isn't that a euphemism for the Prince's "Naughty Bits"??

Right, like an American knows the word euphemism. Admit it cliff, you're Canadian.

I think the same "fun" reasoning applies to mountain dulcimers for me. An instrument that is as easy, or as difficult, to play as one wants to make it.

That would depend on whether it's a Mountain Uferrism or a Great Plains Ufferism. The first one has 4 strings , the second 37.The good news is neither of 'em need left hand runs, but both require great skill with a right hand tarpon. These tarpons are usually made of bone, but some of the more remote inhabitants of the Appalachians use the whole bear.

Would tell you more but its late April and somethings stirring in my Ufferism gig bag (traditional model made from the skins of 4 city boys).
