The inaugural performance of Campbell and Hare last Saturday night went really well. (We played in the restaurant; people from the bar left the bar to come into the restaurant and listen to us.) Now we're thinking of stepping out a bit more--small gigs, probably 150-250 tops--and thinking that a small, inexpensive, easy to use PA system might be a good idea.
It looks like Music123.com has a really good deal on the KPA804 80-watt system, and almost all of the reviews they post indicate that this might be a really good system for two A/E Ovations and two singers. Anyone here have experience with this system or know anything about it?
Thanks.
John

Glad to hear the gig went well, The KPA804..Is that one of the Kustom units?Never mind, I see that it is. That will probably work well for what you do. For my 2 cents worth i think i'd go with the KPA7212 while it gives you 7 channels. It also gives you the ability to use a monitor so you'll be able to hear yourself a little better.
for 501.90 it's a great price just add on the price for a small floor monitor and you got yourself a pretty good deal.

If you're planning on playing over a room of 150-250 people, y'might wanna consider just a wee bit more ower-Pay . . .

Looks like the KPA7217 Could work in that capacity anything larger, he would want something a little larger with more power.
The specs are:

KPM 7250 head

KPM 7250 head is 200 watts RMS
7 channels
5 balanced XLR inputs
7 line inputs with 2 instrument ready preamps
eight 24-bit digital effects
7 band master graphic EQ
line level monitor output

KSE 12 speakers

12" high efficiency speaker
100W RMS/250W peak handling
Frequency response 45-20K
sensitivity 97db
impedence 8 Ohms
MIght just do the trick with some acoustic guitar players and vocalists.
With aromm of 150 to 250.

The KPA804 80-watt system, Definately wouldn't fit the bill for him. In my opinion. price is good and for soemone on a budget it could work.

I've got one of the 804s that my boys use for their forays into rock stardom. IMHO, they are weak. Get more power and better speakers.

Did a little more research. The KPM8420 would be the best of the bunch. Musiciansfriend sell a package deal on it you may want to check it out. It's actually a better choice that the kpa7217.
and it's just a little more than you'd pay for the 7217.Consensus is it's a good bang for the buck PA.

Just reviews of purchasers. There is a buddy of mine in town that is using the 8420. It's not bad, and has a lot better sound than i suspected.
I wasn't sure till i called him last night and asked. I personally like the Peavey systems withthe Yamaha ones coming in close 2nd. I'm talking about the portable powered mixers at least 6 to 8 channels with monitor/main capability.Cliff what does two man group use?

Currently using an old Peavey XR5000C 200w 5-channel head and a pair of Peavey cabs with a 12" and a horn in each. For a monitor, I'm using a single Fender 100w bia-amped monitor.

. . . not a system that I'm particularly thrilled with, but I got the head for next to nothing, and I bought the speakers at a local shop's end-of-year close-out. For a couple of schmuck with no money . . it works. I'd LOVE something newer/bigger, but that's how it goes . . .
If you're doing two guitars and vocals in a room of anywhere NEAR 100 people, 200watts'd be an absolute MINIMUM (imo).
Better to have too much and not use it than to wish you HAD it in the off-hand chance that you need it.
We end up overdriving our system far too often, which probably comes from us not doing the "normal" acoustic-duo faire . . .

Cliff Iagree with you there.
Most of the systems I've had the pleasure of using are in the 200 to 400 watt range Enough to drive mains and monitor. mind you that none of the systems are ones that I have owned, but i've not run into any problems with them. The KPM8420 system that my freind has is 200 watts. He generally uses it for small clubs and small private functions where he's entertaining about 100 to 250 people. He has even used it outdoors for an appearance at a County fair with what he calls good results. He got his used for a song and dance, Head, speakers, a floor monitor two mics and mic stands for $450 bucks.
The system package new without monitor or mic stands is around $699. all depends on how much one has to spenda nd what they can get for the money.
