Having owned Collings, Taylor, Santa Cruz, Gibson, and 6 Martins, I can say that this Ovation is a fine sounding guitar. On the UMGF, Martin owners look for the number that indicates the top quality w/ mirrors. The top on this Legend is straight grained w/ tight lines. Now while not affecting sound, tops are rated by their appearance. I like the built-in tuner, and the ease of adjustment that Ovations sport. Most of my Martins required a setup, a few requiring a new saddle! And they cost a lot more than the $879 that Elderly Instruments charged me for this fine Instrument! OK...I'm off my soapbox. Thanks for listening, Brent

That's the great differnce with the board members here. While many do own other brands besides Ovations, we are all willing to recognize that Ovation makes a great guitar, with it's own strengths. And some of us (again, horrors!) prefer them over other makes of guitars.

I've never played a Collings but the general consensus in guitar mags on this side of the pond is that they are simply the best.

I even agree that top wood and bracing, shape, size, depth, and to a lessor extent back and side tone woods are the primary shapers of tone. But these fruit-loops shelling out hundreds of dollars for fosilized Waulrus kidney-stone bridge pins are out of their minds. That and debating the virtues of plantation grown Indonesian rosewood versus Madagaskar mountain rosewood for a finger board material is just plain anal-retentive. I think such people should spend more time playing their guitars and less time obsessing over bone and ivory nuts.

I owned a Collings D2H, Santa Cruz H, Martin 000-16, D16, D28, ooo-28, 00028EC, 00016SGT, Gibson J-100 to answer one poster's response. I trade every 6-12 months. I'm not putting these down...they are very good. But so is this LX, and the fact that the owner can do his/her own setups is great. Thanks, Brent

There are constant inquiries from new players about what guitar to buy, many on that board will reccommend a Chinese Yamaha or Epiphone plywood box but wont even consider an Ovation. O's are really the Rodney Dangerfield of guitars. But as you can see by this board, once you take the time to check them out and play them, many wont play anything else. The other thing you probably have not found out yet is that O's are also very durable, stay in tune very well, and can take a bit of abuse that will send those girly-man Collins and Santa Cruz guitars crying to the nearest luthier.

Just my Adamas II W597 Cobalt through my Peavey Ecoustic which I brought to the Texas OFC jam. Two and a half hours of the best fun possible with numerous favorable comments on the great sound and appearance of the guitar. The guitar proved itself well here in the midst of guitar-pikkin' country where you better be well-armed lest you be humiliated. Podnah. :)

Ovation makes quality acoustics that play well when plugged in, so they have double value. Most good pickers don't depend on the guitar for quality of sound any more than a NASCAR top quality driver cares what brand of race car he is piloting, the good drivers all will qualify within a few seconds of each other with any car that is built to specifications. A good guitar player gets his/hers sound from ability not from the brand name. Most pickers own various brands and love them all, Ovations included if they are lucky enough to have discovered Ovations qualities. Bailey
