Stopped by the restaurant that had hired us for New Years Eve. He changed where he wants us to set up to the other side of the room - right in front of a fire exit, complete with illuminated sign and panic bar. He wants the other space for more tables.

I told him no. He said it's that or nothing.

Then it's nothing

You'd be the first one out when the disco ball catches fire.

Tell the local fire inspectors to pay him a visit. Around here, they would be VERY interested in something like that.

Yes, it is.

It's easy to point to the Great White disaster in Rhode Island a few years ago, the Coconut Grove fire in the forties, the Gulliver's disaster in the seventies. Granted, I'm not using pyro, but it is a restaurant and kitchen fires are more common than one might think. People will be smoking, there are all sorts of combustibles close at hand . . . If there is a conflagration from what ever source, I don't want the reason people didn't get out to be that they tripped over my equipment in the dark.

Fair enough. In my case, it would take my about 10 seconds to "clear the area" in an emergency, but I just do a solo thing.

Unfortunately, there is likely a line of replacement groups all too happy to take the gig without regard to the fire code.

One of the reasons I'm glad I don't do this for a living.

All the more reason to alert the fire marshall. This owner is being awfully cavalier with peoples' well-being for a few more dollars.

A neighbor two houses down the street from me at the time, in Lisbon Ct. was killed in the Station night club fire. Another gentleman who used to come in to the store I worked in was severely burned. His face and hands were ruined. CALL THE FIRE MARSHALL! You may get blacklisted in your area, but it would be worth it.

Oh, that conversation has already taken place. In a former life I used to be a corporate safety officer and was quite conversant with the NFPA code.

He can't do anything unless and until the violation actually takes place, but is aware of the situation. What he does with the information is up to him.

I'll be elsewhere that night playing a private party. I'm sure all will turn out well.

I dig situations where people do the right thing. Thanks, Losov.
