COOL intrument!!
Had a friend that played one . . .
There's a local guy around here who shows up at various OpenMics & such . . . an absolute MASTER! . . he'll show up amidst a crowd of kids and old "rockers" and just launch into these absolutely lush renditions of old jazz standards and EVERYBODY (bartenders, waiters, waitresses included) would just STOP whatEVER they were doing . . and just "listen" . . . |

Location: atlanta | Kaki played the Stick (part-time, 2002-2004)in the Blue Man Group show in NYC. She passed their audition without ever playing the instrument before. It was her Preston Reed-style 6-string tapping technique that did it:

| Had a friend/aquantance in a Band who mastered this thing! These guy's were good! They were called "805" THe music they did is similiar to the music I a working on now with our band. They had a couple of albums (Stand in Line) interesting music great cover band from the early 80's. Greg Liss was the bass player and Wow what a musician! He later traveled for The Chapman Stick company as a representative. Dave Porter was the lead singer/guitarist and he is still so much like Dave Mathews it is scarry! That Stick was amazing Greg managed to get some amazing sounds out of it and could do Guitar parts and bass parts.

Location: Midland, MI | OT: Is it just me or is that whole Blue Man Group thing way overrated? I get the impression that it started out as three out-of-work dudes that had a bright idea (probably while drinking) and it's all of a sudden the height of 'performance art.' At least in Vegas.
Now, the Chapman Stick...that is cool, although watching videos of people playing them is almost intimidating. I mean, I can't even play a guitar that well. That's impressive that Kaki picked it up and got the job, though, Popcritic! |

| Man they came real close to making it in the big leagues. Too bad they were really good and worked hard enough to deserve a break. The music industry changed on them.... Punk and crap like Cindy Lauper were making the quick cash for the record lables and these guy's, with real talent, got left to the side.
Glad to hear Dave is still at it. He was always fun to watch. A real front man with the crowd.
Cicero.....not to far from me..... did you make the YES concert at the Syracuse Fair last year? That was a pisser! I had not seen those guy's in concert since 1977! They were better now than they were then!

Location: Cicero, NY | Northcountry - Yeah, 805 was the real deal, ok. I was always pushing for them to make the big time but those changes happen all the time in the bigs. There was another group, Dakota, from Scranton, PA that was just an incredible band with big time experience too (the two front guys made up The Buoys – remember “Timothy”?). Basically the same thing happened to them. Signed and then the deal fell apart leaving them on the curb.. What a tough business.
As far as Yes goes, I didn’t see them. Saw Steely Dan and a couple other shows but not that one. |

A great band that used to get a lot of local air play on WLIR. That radio station has gone Latin, but it's nice to see the band is still around. I still remember Peppi beating on a garbage pail and throwing rubber rats into the audience. |

I am gassing so bad for a Stick right now it's getting to a dangerous point. If you could actually just buy one, I'd be in trouble! lol
The waiting list is crazy long, even for a used one, which I guess is a good thing. I see this instrument and all those Stanley Jordan tunes I love but can't play seem possible, just like that... If I could play 'All The Children' on anything (other than a CD player) I think I'd die happy. |

Location: South Jersey | A friend of mine just got one out of the 'Bay. I'd take one of those if it had the stainless frets. The nice thing about the used ones is that you can flip them if you don't like them for minimal if any cost.
I'd really love to see some video of someone playing one, something longer than the little 1MEG jobs on the Chapman website. I'm really quite taken with the thing, I bet a year's worth of work on it and it would be like....I don't know. Like a new color or something. The possibilities are just silly. |

Location: Orlando, FL | Jim, I'm pretty sure Tony Levin has a DVD out, I can't remember the name, but it should have some stick stuff from a master! There is also a live Peter Gabriel DVD that has Tony on it but I don't remember seeing a lot of great shots of Tony palying his stick on that one. |
