"Made In" can be a misleading term. CNN ran a story about "American Made" cars.

Ford Focus - 40% US parts
Toyota Camry - 80% US parts

If you feel patriotic then buy the toyota.

I guess Ford is like Honda then, the parts are made over seas, shipped here and then assembled. It's cheaper than making everything here.

One other really big factor in "overseas" manufacturing is the equipment and technology available. A new plant, wherever it is, is obviously going to get loaded with the latest and greatest state-of-the-art gear, tools, machinery for manufacturing. The cost of replacement vs the cost of just having someone else do the work, on newer, more accurate, machines is a serious consideration.

GoodPoint.
Considering that most of the best manufacturing equipment is made "over there" . . .

I just read about chrysler, and how daimler, basically, did two things, one, they tried to make cars for the european market and sell them here (which of course failed because they were too early) and then looted the company of all its design talent and took it home to Germany. Now these nimnog investment bankers bought it and don't have a clue. At least Fender is a guitar company. It makes you wonder what's happening at Guitar Center, being owned by inverstment bankers.

Chrysler had design talent that Daimler stole? I thought the merger ended up cheapening the Mercedes brand image and quality control, hurting both companies.

You know, the new SL550 does vaguely remind me of a Dodge Neon. Those kraut bastids ...

Although of course in Europe over 80% of Chryslers and Jeeps are sold with diesel engines. Even the biggest of the Jeeps gets over 30mpg.

I work for Daimler

Best thing they did was get rid of Chrysler in light of what has happened.

They were bleeding a $billion a quarter back then.

The Chrysler guys are still in the office next to me, not brimming with a lot of confidence at the moment let me tell you!!
