Several people have a 1987-4 but are different in color. We all have a sticker indicating 78, 18, or 258 out of a 1000 produced. It is still to be determined if there is another serial number on the guitar somewhere that indicates type, color, etc. Some people think the sticker in the bowl is a misprint and they are all 7's or 5's. I've noticed that Stephan 28 and Samova have the same model number 1987-4 but different colors. So the -4 isn't telling us anything. My guitar is much like Samova's but without striations in the finish. Again, read: topic "Who owns a 1987-4 Ovation" in General Posting and join in the discussion. Currently, I am corresponding with John Budny of Ovation in trying to figure this out.

From what I know, they were all natural colored (but with an aging toner on them, similar to the 30th CL's), or black. Stephen28T's used to belong to Sam who bought it on ebay. It was a natural top that Sam had painted sunburst. None came from the factory like that. I don't know where you heard that the 1987's came with a beige finish, but they were wrong (yeah, even if it's on the Ovation webpage or came from somebody at the factory). And if you're worried about why Ovation doesn't change their history, well, I would guess that it's because they are too busy making history. Just my $.02.

As long as they are making history, be accurate. They made the thing, they should be able to handle that. They sent me a cerficate of owner validation. I finally uploaded a picture of my guitar, but have not figured out how to include the picture in my posts.

I'd like to see it moody.pi@cox.net Meatpill, if you go back thru the archives of this site (and you should -- it makes for a great afternoon of reading), you'll discover that there have been a ton of problems dating production models as well as inaccurate info on the Ovation webpage. While I wish that it was all perfect, I'd rather Ovation keep making great guitars. And, honestly, half the fun of this site is trying to figure out the history of Ovation guitars. But realistically, there are going to be errors in the historic info, and gaps in that same info. You can bitch and moan all you want (we all have), but it's not going to change the past.
