Location: Massachusetts | I have an S771 and it is the best neck on the planet.
I just bought the 2005 Collectors and I can deal with the gloss and the loss of fatness to the neck but it feels really narrow to me. My fingers feel cramped on the fretboard.
I measured the spacing between strings between the 2 guitars and it is the same. I didn't measure the width of the wood though.
I am baffled, it just feels cramped. I played my friends Adamas he won on the factory tour back to back with the collectors yesterday and the Adamas feels wider too.
Could it be one of the following:
1. The collectors has a binding making it feel narrower than the S771 or Adamas.
2. I'm trying the new Elixer PB test strings which have much more tension to them than Daddario and the Adamas strings.
What are your thoughts? |

Is string spacing the same? |

Location: Tampa, FL | Though my impression is a little different, I too found a difference between my 2005 Collector's and my Adamas. For me, I find the 2005 to play much easier in the money frets but not as fast up the neck (above fret 5). I can do much better with the Adamas on lead. Since that is strange territory for me, I find the 2005 more to my liking. Could that be related to the neck shape? I kind of considered it a combination of fret height and action. On my 2005 the former is higher and the latter is lower. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | I have both a S771 and a 2005 Collectors...I know what you are talking about. I think the S771 actually has a FAT ("C") neck. It is a very ROUND neck, and definitely the thickest of the guitars I own. Kinda old-timey.
The 2005 Collectors neck is actually BETWEEN slim and fat, IMHO. My 1777 Legend (a slim V) and 2002 Collectors (slim electric-style) both have significantly slimmer necks. As does my Martin 000-16RGT.
My favorite neck is the 1777 Legend.
