Best of both worlds ovation factory pickup blended with magnetic . Has anyone tried this? Is it worth the trouble? Bryan Hhttp://www.ovationfanclub.com/cgi-bin/ubb/non-cgi/icons/icon5.gif

Getting the two to mix within the preamp onboard is pretty tricky, well above my pay grade to tell you how to do it.

Close seconds are the Fishman Rare Earth (active single coil version) and the Baggs M1. Bill's right, needs to be on a separate output with each pickup into independant channels.

I don't think that these are made anymore, but they are pretty good. I had one many years ago. This one even has a volume control.

My Ovation is a 1995 Custom Ledgend (great guitar) I should say its a shallow . The only thing I can think of is to run two seperate signals and preamp each one. Man its alot of work but it seems like it would be a very big sound.

I used one on my Matrix until I got so many electrics that I enjoyed the Matrix more for its deep-bowl acoustic sound. I don't have the one with the volume control and mine is pretty quiet.

I remember that the unwound B string was noticably louder than the wound G string. However as an addition to the piezo, I think that it could work well and add some dynamics or for a lead boost if played though a compressor and/or distortion box and then to an electric amp.

The reason the Lawrence had balance problems was like most soundhole magnetics it was marketed as being suitable for bronze or phos/bronze strings, which is total bollocks. When they manage to defy the laws of physics and make non-ferrous metals have the same magnetic properties as ferrous metals they'll be able to make a mag pickup that works with bronze strings. Even the best of the current magnetics (including the Sunrise) regardless of whatever claims the manufacturers may make about compatibility with bronze strings, all sound better with nickel strings. Try putting a set of bronze strings on a Strat and see how it sounds. Leo Kottke used Lawrence pickups for years, and he used to glue half a cotter pin onto the pickup under the second string in an attempt to tame it.
