A guy on ebay had a Celebrity Dlx CS245 12-string w/ case for sale. Bridge is pulled off. Crack in top from bridge to end of body, replacement bridge included. Wants $150 for it all.

I'm interested because he live less than a hour away, and it might be a good way to pick up an inexpensive 12 string to play. I don't think it will be hard to re-set the bridge, but I do have concerns about the crack in the laminate top and damage to the pick-up.

Can this wise group give me a guesstimate on what it might be worth. He is stuck at the $150 mark saying that the case is worth 'at least $100'. I don't need a $150 used case.

Thanks,

Brad

Best bet is to call the factory for a quote with some GOOD pics, showing the damage so they can see EXACTLY how much work is needed... Hopefully there are no hidden problems like cracked braces to deal with...

Maybe if you got the pics you could post them HERE to get an opinion...

If the crack in the top is through the laminations its a sad case. Unfortunately, the better solution may be to part it out.

Another question to ask is, how did the bridge get pulled off? If it was due to overtuning of the strings, there's a good chance of problems with the neck as well. If the top was stressed enough to pull the bridge off and crack a laminated top, it had to be something major.

I would think that once you combine the repair costs with the $150.00, you would have enough to find a good used USA model 12 string. I've seen nice Baladeers 12's on Ebay for around $400 to $500. You can probably even find a used Legend for a few bucks more.

What I was thinking about was picking it up REAL cheap and fixing the bridge myself. I've got access to bridge clamps and it shouldn't be too hard to do.

Yes, stresses suffcinet to pull the bridge and crack the top are my real concerns. Is it even worth trying to fix?

The driving force here is to aquire a 12 string to play around with for very little $$$$$$. I'm not concerned that it won't be high quality or beautiful.

I have personally witnessed how Kim Keller "services" Celebrity!

BluesSailor....a beat up Ovation is better than many brand new models. It seems like your expections are in the right place. As long as you know what your getting you'll be alright.

I'm not an expert, but I would think that you would need a professional in order to get it in good playing condition. A 12 string without a good set up will be so hard to play, you probably will never use it. Do you know a luthier or guitar tech in your area. You may want to run it past him or her.

Hmmm....John is right...There is nothing worse than a hard to play 12 string.

I doubt if anything will come of this anyway. All I really see here is a pile of scrap that I'm willing to throw a LITTLE time and money and a set of strings towards to have something to play around with (sorry moodypi :D )

The email I got back from the seller said he was pretty firm on his price. I wished him well and asked that he get back to me if he were to reconsider.
