Location: Denver, PA USA | Hello all,
I want to lower my action on my 1777LX and just want to know if there is anything I need to be aware of? I looked at the owners manual and it shows shims. How many are in there? I plan on just taking 1 out for now to try it. But sometimes manulas don't always tell you things you should know. Any suggestions? I have done action adjustments on other guitars. But with them you just sand down the saddle.

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | There should be from one to three shims under the saddle. Removing each shim will lower the action 1/64". It's much easier than sanding down a saddle. |

Location: Upper Left USA | Remove the strings the first time you do this. that way you won't damage the lead on the pickup - pull it out straight.
Most likely you will need to pull two shims.

Welcome! I am curious why you say I should pull 2 shims out?

Location: Upper Left USA | I was assuming it was new. They come with three shims. That's were I ended up with mine. |

Location: Tampa, FL | The consensus around these parts seems to think that the facory action needs to be 1/32 lower. On my 2005ES there were only 2 shims installed, but they were different thicknesses. So I took out the thick one (1/32) and left in the thin (1/64) one. |

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | Both of my LX's came with only one shim. I believe that they only use enough shims to achieve the "factory" set up, depending on the individual guitar. I think that the maximum number of shims that they would us is 3 or 4. |

Location: Denver, PA USA | OK. Here is another question. If there is only 1 shim and I want the action lower, what do you do? Am I SOL? I would check how many are there are now and adjust it now but I am going to wait till I need new strings on it.

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | If you only have one shim, you can remove it. I removed them from both of my guitars. How much do you want to lower the action? I would be surprised if the action is still too high with no shims under the saddle. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | I'm 49. So when I wanna make a change in my cell phone I start to get out my 300 page owners manual and just then a teenager grabs my phone and says "I don't need to read that! Just let me fiddle around with it and it'll be done in a minute". Think of your guitar in that way. Take off the strings, lift up the p/u, pull out the shims and count. These Ovations are so darn user-friendly you'll LOOK for opportunities to do some work on it in the future! If you have any questions as you go, we'll be right here. Good luck and have fun. This same friendly helper is one and the same bauerhillboy that recently said something to the effect of: Gonna get me the biggest drill bit I can find, gonna immobilze my helpless Ovation on the nearest stable surface, and I'm gonna put a little vent in her. ;)

Location: Warren,Pa. | Now that I've spent some time with my altered guitar I'm very pleased with the results. Placement of the hole is critical though. I play with the neck fairly high in the air and the venthole doesn't face me. When I move the neck to a more horizontal position the hole is facing me directly and my ears get plenty of sound. Furthermore, I think the hole needs to be BIGGER; not a bigger circle, but more elongated. I'm considering a shape similar to the Op Pro that's on the guitar. This would mean a smaller hole drilled further onto the shoulder, then connecting the 2 holes by cutting out the fiberglass between them. Just like I said...user-friendly! Just have some fun! |
