What is the verdict? |

Location: Massachusetts | I voted put up with it. This is my second 05. I got a good deal on one at GC and it felt narrow but the neck seemed to be decently fat to compensate. So I was very happy.
Then I saw a used one here on the forum and bought that one. It has more sustain, better ebony but more grain on the top. The neck is skinnier top to bottom and feels narrower, I bump strings easy. Swapping nuts with my S771(which feels amazing) did nada.
So, it still is a great, great guitar and at $450 less than what I paid at GC I got the bargain of the century and returned the GC one.
All in all...I am still a very happy camper but there is absolutely no doubt this neck feels narrower.
On the plus side, I've griped about the gloss finish in the past but I have encountered no ill effects even playing in the hot sun and sweating. It ain't nitro like on Fenders/Gibsons so no stick!!!! That's great news!!!! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I'm telling you, it's an illusion (within manufacturing tolerances). I too thought the '05 neck felt skinny. I measured it against other "normal, older" Ovations and the string spacing was the SAME or even slightly wider. But it sure didn't feel that way. Then my CL shows up and same thing. It feels skinny, but it measures out perfectly. I think it's just some kind of illusion with the LX necks. Or maybe the profile is just different enough that it fools you into thinking the string spacing is narrow - but it's not really. Dave |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | The string spacing is fine on mine, but the action was out of spec high on both bass and treble sides. I removed a .015" (thin) shim and now it is more what I would expect.

This would allow for the same visual and measured linear width, but under the fingers over the curve of slightly greater radius the strings would actually be slightly farther apart. |

For example a flat fretboard (that's a REALLY big radius) strings are closer together than a 10" radius board.

You are correct, I was backward. Still, a different radius over the same width would have an effect on the string spacing.
I haven't measured the radius on the Uterus or the Fudd yet, but as stated in the other post on this topic, the two guitars have the same nut width, but feel very different under my fingers...the Uterus feels like the strings are closer. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | For a fixed nutwidth, the difference in string spacing as a function fretboard radius is miniscule. Shall I draw a graph?
Anyway, bottom line is that they all feel different and there are many factors involved. U681 and FD14 are supposed to be the same, but I agree with Jeff they DO feel different. Maybe it's the neck thickness or profile. If it's slightly different it can put your hand in a somewhat different position and the width seems to feel different to you even though it measures the same. I also think there is some variabilty in how the nuts are slotted. You really need to talk about FOUR factors: 1) the nut width, 2) the string span (how the nut is slotted), 3) the neck thickness and 4) the neck profile. JMO. Dave |
