Location: Phoenix AZ | On Saturday I played at a BBQ/open mic event. This was the the first use of my contour bowl CL out of the house and it went great. The OpPro was a breeze to setup with the PA (XLR) and I played standing up which is something I would have never even attempted with a roundback. I could not have been happier. A number of people commented how nice the black and abalone looked under the lights. Little did they know I had been polishing the damn thing all afternoon just to get it ready. Two songs on the CL and then it was time to break out the ukelele for some REAL fun. Dave |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Dave: I don't understand the ukelele thing? What is the obsession with ukeleles? The only time I remember hearing them is when Tiny Tim and Don Ho played them. I wasn't all that impressed with the sound then.
I also would like to comment on your great collection, but I was wondering why you don't have any acoustic basses. |

Now, THAT is probably just what you think of ukuleles, right? I'm not criticising you. Everyone has their opinion. You and I just see things differently. I think ukuleles are something either you get it or you don't. Some people don't and that's OK. If I died tomorrow and could take one instument with me to heaven, it would be a ukulele (some would argue that heaven would turn into hell very quickly, ha ha).
Someone once explained it to me this way: Ukulele's are like Tatoo's. Some people are really into it and other people dispise them. Some think that tatoos (btw, I have none) are nothing more than the old US Navy ship on grandpa's forearm. But low and behold, there is an entire industry and subculture out there and the artistic aspect can be just amazing.
My fascination with uke's started when I saw the Paul Mccartney and George Harrison DVD's. All of a sudden the idea of playing a uke became "cool". Since then, I have owned 22 ukuleles. Most have been resold as I've "tweaked" the collection, which now numbers a paltry 7. My first uke cost $99. my most recent $1250. After watching the concert DVDs I did an internet search on ukuleles and was just floored at what I found. All shapes, sizes and musical styles. Forget the Tiny Tim and Don Ho visions. There are symphony orchestra out there made up entirely of ukuleles. Uke versions of the heaviest of heavy metal. You name it.
I can't put a finger on it, but since I play basically for my own enjoyment only, I know what I like. And playing a ukulele just seems to put a smile on my face like a guitar never could.
I don't mind that you (+ most others, + my wife, + + + etc.) think I am just plain sick. It makes ME happy and that's all that matters, right? But that acoustic bass thing is totally stupid.

When I was a kid,(A long time ago). I had a Baritone Uke. Loved the sound, small and portable. Might look into getting another.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Here's the one I was thinking about ... Techncially a cutaway solid body, i.e. the part cutaway is a hole right through the freakin' thing. Or, maybe matching front/rear soundholes? Will be great times in the FUBAR hall this year.
