On the VIP preamp, It seems on mine, you can activate the tuner without the dummy (or regular) 1/4" plug, by just putting your finger on the XLR out on the guitar. It seems the conductivity of your finger, (especially if its a little damp) activates the preamp. I noticed this by accidentally touching the out and saw the light blink on the amp. It's kind of a pain to hold your finger there and pluck the string, but in a pinch, it seems to work. Maybe mine is just a fluke, someone else try this and let us know.

TJ,

Just checked my 1680 and it's the same as yours. The up/down indicators are weak though.

Without the preamp schematic, further experimentation is on hold...

Also...

Have you noticed that the way saddle seems to be mounted slightly higher on the top E side? Mine is at least... It's like there's a tapered shim under there, but there isn't.

I wonder who many of us here has a 1680?

I adjusted the neck SLIGHTLY and getting really used to it's feel. Going back to a wood top is not going to be easy or pleasant.

Yep...I noticed the same thing. On mine, its not really usable, but its true you can cause the pre-amp to flicker on that way.

It is possible that sticking a wet pinkie across the three prongs of the XLR may not be good for it...

You are shorting out the system... Just trying to be the voice of sanity.

OK, this has gone from a finger that is a little moist from normal humidity in Florida to a finger that has made a trip around the inside of someone's mouth and then spit on. You don't have to get your finger wet to make it work, and I believe it's accomplishing the same thing a 1/4" jack does when it hits the contacts in the jack. I don't think "the company" would design an open jack (xlr) that would damage the system if someone inadvertently touched the prongs.

There is zero risk of damage from this. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Nothing.

Just wait until your guitar gets a guitar virus and will only play cowboy chords.
