Location: Gresham, Or | I am activly in the market to buy a 1114 (see my post in sell/trade) and just came upon one in a local pawn shop that was strung with steel strings. It was built in 1981, ser #229382. I recall reading somewhere that steel strings on a classic style guitar is a no-no. Does that also apply to Ovation 1114s? Your thoughts please. I did sight across the top in the area of the bridge and didn't see any appreciable lifting or distortion. Otherwise the guitar is in good condition over all. The pawn broker would take $300, no case. Should I grab it or run? |

though it would be interesting to hear how they sound on it...
Be sure to reach in and check the bracing to insure they are secure...you can also use a mirror. Play the entire neck to check the action and intonation. Use a tuner at 12th fret if necessary. |

So, it is made for steel strings, no problem.
Grab it! |

Blues
EDIT: Just checked, at $460, w/ one day + left |

Location: Gresham, Or | Thanks all for the response. I've gone back to the Ovation website and taken a real close look at the photo of the 1114 and sure enough, it is strung with steel. But, that is the only way one can tell. Strings are not mentioned in the description, and the classic style slotted head and tuners lead one to assume nylon. I'll be seeing the Pawn Dude in the AM. Again, Thanks All. |
