Lots of big time pros would go in there to drink and sit in. Later on, the joint got "discovered", and that kind of killed the scene, but for a long time it was super cool. Clint Eastwood used that bar, or a soundstage copy, to film his Any Which Way but Loose movies. I hope I'm not the only one in the group to have stories about that place. Oh, have I got stories....

They used to have open mike nights during the week that I recall as being frequented by some who have since became legends. Sigh, I am not one of those. Bailey

For a while Haggerd had a place down the street, called the Hag, or something like that. I got to see Doc and Merle do a two man show there back in '70 or so. Great show. As far as the Palamino club, everyone in the business played in that joint. It was not a big night club, only a neighborhood bar, but when an act came to town they stopped by.

How about the Dead, and the Commander, at the Hollywood Bowl? Great show. Sunset Blvd. had some great bands. The Whiskey, Gazzaris', the list is too long. No wonder you passed the test! Where did you grow up? I'm glad you had a chance to live through that era. Those are one of a kind experiences.

I grew up on the South Bay ... most of the time in Portuguese Bend, between Redondo and San Pedro on the peninsula. Remember Marineland? I grew up looking at that and Catalina. Special place - LA was back then. Did you ever see Honk? From Laguna Niguel, lots of country flavor to their music. They did the soundtrack for Five Summer Stories.

That should tell you something. Do you remember Pacific Ocean Park, Teen Fairs in Hollywood, Balboa island, Big Bear, and the all night pre- Rose Bowl parties in Pasadena? What a blast! Ovation guitars had not yet been invented.

I have only vague memories of POP, but spent much time at The Pike in Long Beach, before they tore it down so they could clean up the neighborhood. ;) Used to go cruise Van Nuys Blvd and Ventura Blvd through the valley ... Encino, Reseda, Van Nuys were spots where a lot of hot cars would show up to show off. Mine was a 68 Camaro SS396.

Everyone wanted to race me and I took a lot of flack for declining. I always wanted it to grow up into a 390 AMX.

The '68 camaro was a highly sought after car, still is. The Pike was a wild, rickety ride. You always felt like you were going to die, and there were some accidents. The Palomino was such a dinky little bar to have all those big names play there. To hear those players from a distance of six feet away was amazing. It was like they were jamming in your garage. Ricky Nelson, Willie, Linda Ronstadt, Walon, etc.. were booked there frequently. There were not really any other C+W joints around, because it was considered unhip to like that stuff. When some celebs were playing, other big names would come in to listen, sit in, and party. The whole scene was very casual, and a heck of a lot of fun. These days, Austin, Tx. still maintains that kind of vibe, and some of the same people are still down there jammin'. The ones that are still breathing.

In fact, Richard Thompson is playing a couple of shows there next week. I bought some tickets to see Emmylou in early November when I'll be back there (I hope).
