John, your first? You won't sleep for the next 18 years. Raising kids is the hardest thing you'll ever do in your life.

But it's the abolute best thing you'll ever do. If there's anything more important than raising a family, I haven't found it.

Congratulations, Dad!

Yes it's our first and she's a girl so I will be sleepless much longer than 18 years. LOL

Thanks Cliff. Yeah I know my life as I know it is now over, but I'm prepared for some of the changes. I haven't slept in weeks anyway because I've been so nervous. We're pretty much homebodies, so we're fine with being at home. Most of my friends have young kids and more on the way, so most of our social functions involve babies anyway. I do have one advantage over most guys. The only hobby that I really love is playing guitar, which I will have do more of (gigs) since my wife will be staying home for the first few years. I know it's gonna be different, but I think I was ready for a change anyway. Look at it this way, Julia (that's her name) can eventually be a new regular fan to come to our gigs (until she gets old enough to think her dad is "soooo lame"). LOL.

Trust Me. It ain't over at 18.
(At least I have the luxury of publicly berating my daughter's boyfriends when she brings 'em to my gigs . . :-)

John congratulations!
I have raised two daughters and it is truly a blessing. Now before you do anything else buy a grave marker and have the word Boyfriend put on it. Place it under a tree so when some guy like Cliff shows up to take your daughter out, you can show him what happened to the last guy. All fooling aside it is an honor to raise children.
Enjoy it goes by fast.

I've been on the road...

So, I open this thread... It reads like a movie script.
1, Glad no one got hurt.
2, The search... Coast to coast.
3, "Free" legal advise
4, A few side-bar my Dad stories
5, The find of the "new" car
6, The birth of a baby
7, Off to a gig...

Great short story.

I'll tost one to your good fortune tonight.

Actually I was thinking of starting a gun collection just so I can take them out to clean them whenever a potential boyfriend comes around, but I like your idea too.

Guns are passe.

What you want is a machete.

It makes a nice, resonant "s-s-s-s-s-s-ingg!" sound as the sharpening stone leaves the blade at the end of the long, slow pass along it's edge . . .

Make sure that the lighting provides the right amount of "glint" as it reflects off the blade into his eyes . . .

Lightly brush the edge along his arm, and ask if he thinks it's "sharp enough?".

Guns suggest a detached, passing thought.

A machete denotes a degree of "creativity" and the care of "doing a good job" . . .
;)

How timely. I was just talking to somebody about one of my ex-partners who used a machete to scare a teenager who ran him off the road. The cops weren't so understanding when they came to arrest the guy for assault.
We're just not safe anymore. I'm not talking about being safe from guys with machetes. I'm talking about being safe from teenagers. Those good old shotgun and machete threats used to scare kids into thinking. Now they just report us to the cops, who bust us for child abuse.
I also have 2 daughters that are almost raised, but still keep me awake nights. The oldest and her boyfriend are way left of left field. The latest is that they don't want to join us for Thanksgiving because they don't want to celebrate the killing of turkeys. Some of the best and worst times are with the kids, but there is never enough time for them.

A ex co-worker of mine used to clean his gun on the dining room table everytime his daughter brought a boy home for the first time. This probably back fired big time because his daughter never got married.

Fortunately, I have never been arrested and as far as I know, no one ever turned me in for child abuse. My wife eventually agreed that our kids deserved to be spanked occasionally and they turned out alright.
We have a bunch of feminazis in the prosecutor's office here, who love to prosecute dads who spank their kids.

My wife won't let me spank her. When our oldest was just getting to the terrible 2s a little early, she started throwing kicking and screaming tantrums. My wife had read all the books and told me I was not to spank the kids because it made them think that violence was appropriate. I had enough when our daughter threw a tantrum in the middle of the street. I think that was her only spanking. She was a smart kid.
Maybe I should have started again when she was a teenager.

I did this to my then future son in law. Couple of days before the wedding, I had bought a new stock for my tactical rifle and was admiring the installation on the kitchen table, carefully cleaning it. The Son-in-law wannabe comes in, and looks a bit funny and says...aw...what's that...heh...heh. I think he was actually nervous. I told him how a Davis family tradition was the "father of the bride" got a new firearm of his choosing to take to the wedding. Since the colors were dark suits for the men, I thought the new McMillan stock was perfect. It was part of that tradition that we got to take and display the weapon.......you know, in case the groom get's cold feet...heh...heh.

To his credit, while daughter said I really had him going, they did get married. Might even let the good doctor (well she married smart anyway) shoot it someday...if he asks nice. Only negative is when he decided to buy a new guitar, he bought a Martin... May have to revisit the 'ol Tac rifle.
