I aquired a 2003 collectors and am quite pleased with it...a couple of questions, first what are the "strings of choice" for this guitar, I assume that it is a elite more or less.
Second, what is the lightest gauge that would work...trying to save some $$ buying countless string gauges..also, how much of a pain in the ass is it to lower the rear bridge?..thanks for the help.

The 2003 is a very nice instrument. It was about the first with the inlayed epaulets and the tones and trim on it are a work of pure craftsmanship.

Welcome!
Strings are a good point of debate around here. Elixers, D'Addarios, Adamas 1818 are common reccomendations. Go light gauge if you must but mediums will give a better sound usually.

When you have the strings off, reach inside and feel around for the wiring going up through the top to the bridge/saddle. GENTLY push it up til the saddle starts to come up. GENTLY work the saddle out. There should be a shim (or two) under the saddle. Remove one. CAREFULLY reassemble and restring.

G'Luck(&Welcome).

Personal choice.
There are not countless string gages, at least if you buy them in sets. To figure out what you want do the following:

First figure out what's your gage, using D'addario phospher bronze, buy light, custom light, and extra light. See what gage you like, spend a week with each one. In terms of string gages that's your choices.

Ok, now that you have the gage:
Then figure out what formula string you want, 80/20 bronze, 80/15 bronze or phosphor bronze. (Or some other formula that sounds interesting to you)

Spend a week with each one.
Ok, now that you have the formulation:
Figure out if you really need coated or uncoated strings. You probably don't absolutely need it but try two brands probably D'addario and elixers.

Then look at what brand you like. Buy one set each in the gage and formulation you like. Try Elixer's, D'addario and Dean Markley.

Now that you have favorite brand you will come to the conclusion that free strings are the best.

However, thanks to one of the founders of the OFC, all things being equal, I gravitate to Dean Markley.

Enjoy!

PS If I put together mixed set, for the e string I use a medium, for the a and d strings I use light stings, and the g b and e I use extra light because I like to bend 'em.

Thanks, good info....I lean to lighter strings cause I bend the hell out of them too...I maybe change gauges before I lower the saddle as lighter strings should set lower....let the fun begin...

I second that but I use 17's. Buy enough of them and you can get yourself a nice stool.

Please, Bill. We try to refrain from using words like "stool" around Cliff. It just encourages him.

I have been debating with myself (sounds a little psycho huh?)about whether to use light or medium gauge strings. I have opted to use the Adamas brand, as I have found that they seem to sound better than the others I have tried, and also seem to keep their sound a little longer. In an attempt to come to a conclusion about the light vs medium gage question, I just purchased two pairs of each on ebay. I'm pretty sure the mediums will sound louder and clearer, but I'll let you know what I come up with after the comparison. I'll be doing the experiment on my new Adamas 1681, since she has such a nice full bottom end. (Now THERE's another opening for someone :)
