I recently got back an old Ovation Korean Celebrity that was out on indefinite loan. I haven’t seen this guitar in years. The neck is straight as an arrow but the saddle is almost flush with the top of the bridge. The action is over an 8th of inch at the 12th fret. It needs a neck reset!

I think that this may be a guitar that has epoxy all over the dovetail joint and the polyurethane type finish covering the outside. I run a high risk of destroying the guitar if I try to remove the neck. What are my options?

It's funny! I was thinking the same thing! How high should the action be for that? I'm not currently a slide player...

Welcome to the club! I can't give you any guaranteed ways of doing this work without doing damage, but I can think of options. 1)Try to do it yourself and be mentally prepared for a difficult time and, possibly, a useless guitar when you're done. 2)If it's got lots of sentimental value to you, don't do anything to it. Just hang it on the wall. This is exactly what I did with my early '70's Madeira 12 string. It was my first 12...I was in love with it (still am)...but it's unplayable and not at all cost-effective to fix. The memories come back like a flood sometimes when I see it hanging there. Not a bad ending. John <>{

Thank you for the imput. What is the typical 12th fret action height for a slide player?

Somewhere between a skosh more and a finger width?

Install a new saddle and it should be loud, proud and strong.

". . What is the typical 12th fret action height for a slide player? . ."

T'where it gets so bad, y'can't take no mo' . .
. . y'got's t'suffah if'n y'wants t'play d'Blues
(Bill, I think I need to keep the National's back in their cases for a while) . . .

Just get it to where you're not hitting the frets with the slide . . .

Check out Matt Smith's link and get one of the Nunnwell blown glass slides.
