Anyway, the Doobies played Black Water, and guitarist John Simmons (i think thst's his name), was playing an Ovation. It looked like a legend, tobaco burst, non cut away.

Doobie or Not Doobie (part 2) From the TV show What’s Happening! (episode #38, 1978) Here are a couple Doobies with O's and one with a Chet SST. Tom Johnston 1979 Pat Simmons & John McFee 1996

I'm a big fan of the early Doobies and Tom Johnston....I didn't care for them anymore after he left. That southern funk and R-and-B edge he brought to the table was gone..... Roger

During the preliminaries, they did a bit of a quick "montage" of Neil through the years. Caught a glimpse (for about .8 seconds) of Neil onstage playing his SlotHead . . . Supposedly the new album's gotten a lot positive reviews (Rolling Stone gave it 4-stars). It was produced by Rick Rubin who forced him to leave the pomp and sequins at home, and take a more "back-to-basics" approach as a singer-songwriter. One of the things that Rubin made him do was to do his OWN guitar-playing, and made him play guitar WHILE he recorded his vocals . . .

Johnston and Simmons were great early and I loved what McDonald did with them as well. He's still one of my all time favorite vocalists. And if there's anyone who can give Neil a new breath, it'd be Rubin. I'll give it a chance...
