I was watching the What's Happening marathon on TV land, hoping to catch the Doobie Bros episode, my good luck that was the episode that was on just when I turned on the TV.

Anyway, the Doobies played Black Water, and guitarist John Simmons (i think thst's his name), was playing an Ovation. It looked like a legend, tobaco burst, non cut away.

It was a two-part episode... it's showing on the tube out here from 12 to 1am.
Didn't know the TVLand channel existed until now.

Doobie or Not Doobie (part 2)
From the TV show What’s Happening! (episode #38, 1978)

Here are a couple Doobies with O's and one with a Chet SST.

OOOH, OOOH, OOOH, it looks like Tom Johnston is playing a 1617 Legend (I have one)!!!!

I'm a big fan of the early Doobies and Tom Johnston....I didn't care for them anymore after he left. That southern funk and R-and-B edge he brought to the table was gone.....

I really only know the comercial stuff, but Black Water is a really cool tune.

Too bad there aren't any players of that caliber playing Ovations now. Oh that's right, there aren't any players of that caliber now! All we have is Nikki Suxx.

This morning I was watching "SundayMorning" on CBS and they did a story on Neil Diamond and his current album. During the preliminaries, they did a bit of a quick "montage" of Neil through the years. Caught a glimpse (for about .8 seconds) of Neil onstage playing his SlotHead . . .

Supposedly the new album's gotten a lot positive reviews (Rolling Stone gave it 4-stars). It was produced by Rick Rubin who forced him to leave the pomp and sequins at home, and take a more "back-to-basics" approach as a singer-songwriter. One of the things that Rubin made him do was to do his OWN guitar-playing, and made him play guitar WHILE he recorded his vocals . . .

Always been a huge fan of the Doobies. Old stuff and newer...it'a all great, just different. Johnston and Simmons were great early and I loved what McDonald did with them as well. He's still one of my all time favorite vocalists. And if there's anyone who can give Neil a new breath, it'd be Rubin. I'll give it a chance...

I know Tom Johnston is on the last three albums...."Cycles" was OK, but after that, they seemed to be going through the motions.

Speaking of neil diamond, I got Free tickets to the 1986 Concert Tour and the show was outstanding!.He played al of his hits, and there was a couple of Ovations on stage during that tour. neil played one and fro a few numbers but switched off to what looked like a custom made Gibson Jumbo, with some sort of sparkle finish.
