Location: Parrish, FL | Happened to be in Wilson, NC this weekend while playing taxi service for my son who was refereeing in a soccer tournement. Had the day to kill and went into town to troll the pawn shops and music stores for deals and steals. Got downtown and wandered into a festival they were having. Listened to a 4 piece band play regaee, ska, caribbean beat music. Very tight band who carried a Saturday morning crowd with their Saturday night show. Not a bad trick considering the rural mom and pop crowd at the festival.
During their break, I walked around the festival and found another stage being set up. Found a flyer about the festival and when I looked to see who else was playing there was a picture of Doc Watson. So at 12:30 I wandered down to see 2 hours of the best guitar picking I've see in a long, long time.
He played by himself, with his grandson Richard Watson, and another guy who I probably should be familiar with, but am not, Jack Lawrence. Doc played an Epiphone, and Richard tore up the full neck on a Tacoma cutaway. Jack came out with a vintage Martin (didn't think there wouldn't be a Martin involved in this did you?) that was everything they are said to be.
Anyway, quite a show. What a great surprise! Made my weekend. |
