Hello Ovation Fan Club! I've been trying to get registered for a few weeks now, and just this evening realized that my anti-spam filter was soaking up the password notifications. Doh! Got that sorted out now.

Quick introduction: Been playing since I was a kid (I'm 42 now). First guitar was a friend's brother's ... oh never mind. My wife is looking over my shoulder and insists that this be about her... So: my wife is a total babe. You'd never guess that we have seven kids. She plays flute like an angel. etc, etc, etc.

But back to me. Second guitar was (is) an Ovation Matrix. Don't recall exactly when I got it. Somewhere around 1977 or so. Still have it. My kids plink on it.

Put guitar down for quite a few years, then picked it back up in the late 1990's. Wasn't sure what I wanted, so I tried out a bunch of different guitars. Ended up with an Adamas SMT 1597. Really like it.

Been playing at church on Sundays for three years now. It is really fun to get back into this.

I found this group through Wikipedia. I was poking around with that over the past few months, and happened to look up Ovation Guitars. Found a very biased article, and posted a "notice on non-neutrality". That's when I found this group. I tried to log in, but that's when all the trouble started. Anyway, some of you guys who are obviously exceptionally knowledgable about Ovations (I've been reading the messages daily even though I couldn't log in) should go and flesh out that article.

For no apparent reason, I was recently struck by the idea of getting another guitar. So, I started trying some out. Funny thing is I can't find one that plays as well or sounds as good as my Adamas. Actually, I can't find one that is even close. That includes some high end Taylors and Martins. Guess I'm just stuck with the Adamas.

Anyway, that's my intro. I look forward to learning from all the folks here.

Cheers!

Jeff

Hi Jeff and welcome. These guys know Ovations. We are a diverse group, but we all have one thing in common, good taste in guitars.

We have a lot of similarities, Omaha, except I have you by 10 years. I found this board when I was trying to find out info on guitars or amps last Christmas. Didn't get the O I wanted, but got 7 others since, give or take. This board is really bad for causing GAS.

Funny you should mention that. I was just telling my wife last night how I felt really lucky with my Adamas purchase a few years ago.

At the time, I really didn't know what I was doing. I had a general affinity for Ovations based on what I had observed back in the '70's, but that was about it.

I tried Taylors, but simply could not get myself to buy a guitar with a fingerjointed neck. I thought that looked really cheap.

I tried about everything out there are the time. I kept going back to the Adamas just based on the sound.

Now as I look back, I feel like I (literally) bought the best guitar made.

Cheers!

Jeff

Hi Mike!!

Lets go easy on the newcomer. He's a long time addict, but remeber, GAS is a progressive disease. He hasn't started experimenting with textured tops or slotheads yet :p

Jeff, You're off to a good start!! below are some steps we follow that can help...
(I sure hope I'm not the only one who thinks this is funny) :D

12 Steps of O&A/A

1. We admitted we were powerless over
GAS—that our lives had become unmanageable (without another guitar).
2. Came to believe that a collection of guitars greater than our own could restore us to sanity. (yeah, Right!)
3. Made a decision to turn our will and credit card numbers over to the care of AL (the Official OFC Dealer) as if we understood him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our guitars, and how much fun they are to play
5. Admitted to CWK2, to ourselves and to another OFC Member the exact nature of our GAS.
6. Were entirely ready to have AL put us down for a OFC/#47 when they're available.
7. Humbly asked Him to hold our checks until after payday, and not to tell out wives.
8. Made a list of all persons we had given GAS to with our guitars, and became willing to help advise them on their next guitar aquisition
9. Made direct efforts to help such people (with the OFC, AL, Ebay links, etc)wherever possible, except when to do so would jepordize an amazing deal on a guitar we've been waiting years to get our hands on.
10. Continued to take a personal guitar inventory and when we had GAS promptly sought/traded to fulfill it.
11. Sought through the OFC, Al, and Ebay to improve our collection (even if that means trading and selling off a few guitars to make room for something new), hoping only for knowledge of a great deal when we see it and the assets to aquire it without hassle.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this
message to WOOD BOX guitar players, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Amen.

No, I've never had that happen to me. Another guitar? Why?

Buckaroo, by the looks of your signature you've had GAS for a long time. If you admit you have it, it might be the first step to a cure, but then what fun would that be?
The following is a list of items that a recognized authority (my wife) says are worse than GAS:
1. Bimbos
2. Porsches
3. BMWs

That's it so far. She lets me buy Porsches and BMWs, but hasn't allowed #1 yet. If you need help satisfying your GAS pains, I can send you some Porsche and BMW ads to show your wife. Pretty soon she'll be buying you that new O.

Perhaps I am guilty of having too many guitars. It's just that when I find a deal... Well, you know. I can justify my string addiction by not owning a Taylor. I like my "new" Matrix.
My wife wants a new ice box, oops, I mean refridgerator. In the interest of fairness, she'll get it. That should even us out. Cheers

Welcome, Jeff. Since you're over 40, have a sense of humor, suffer from GAS, and play at church., you're sorta a cross-section of our membership in one guy. Glad to have you aboard. I'm guessing you and the missus have been known to strike up a little Marshall Tucker or Jethro Tull, huh? Although I suppose Ian Anderson plays flute more like a devil than an angel.

Welcome.

I posted a link about Ovation in Wikipedia a few weeks ago. Saw your protest. Good work.

I find that folks named "Jeff" are exceptionally bright.

Mainly cos they seem to sit around all day rubbing themselves to a high polish finish.
