I going to have my Viper solidbody professionally set up. This will of course include a new set of strings. I have always used a set with the high E at a diameter of .08. I have mostly used Ernie Ball's and Gibson's. I learned the hard way not to use Fender Silver Bullets. Are there any brands or diameters you recomend? If you could, please include your reasons for your recomendations.

DR Pure Blues. I use 10's and they're very bendable. Great tone.

Light gauge (#10) go on my Viper. Flatwound if I find a deal. Brand is not a big concern for me on my electrics, I can't tell much differences. 10s or 11s seem to have more sustain than do the super lights. Trial and error works well, since the choice is subjective.

A 10 or 11 set, I prefer the stainless, not as gritty as nickle. Moving up from 8s might require a neck tweek.

May I suggest you use a .063 for the bottom course followed by a a set of "10's" but toss out the 10 and put the "E" where the "A" would go. Tune to BDGCF#B and see if your windows need more caulking!

This is an adaptation (plagarism saves time) of the Matt Smith poor man's baritone.

Just a thought.

I forgot to add Dean Markly Blue Steel Cryogenic Custom Light .09's-.046

For the poor man's baritone you might be interested in the D'addrio Baritone Light EXL 158, then you wouldn't have to canibalize from another set.

I've done it on my telecopy, but I've yet to experiment on the electric papoose. After five months I'm still exploring the fretboard. It's a guitar, but the notes are in different places.

Let's see ... this would be de-tuning an "a" stringed instrument, what would that sound like? Right now it's A,D,G,C,E,A. Detuned would the low A be D#?
I guess it would sound like a low chunky mandolin. Probably good for punk rock rhythm.

Or maybe a de-tuned uke on steroids. That would be fun.

Duh, the low tuning was staring me in the face for the A-tuned instrument, it's obvious:
EADGBE!
