Location: Anchorage, Alaska | Have any of you with the U681T done much experimenting with different strings? I have only used Elixer lights (12's) on it so far. I need a string change so I thought I might try something different. I know this is a pretty subjective subject, but what are your thoughts? |

Location: Orange County, California | I'm playing DR "mediums" (12-54) right now. The trebeles seem normal, but the the basses are wound tighter on a thicker core, so they alegedly have more mass per string without being much thicker. It's kind of like mixing sets, but it's not so out of balance. I think I like the Adamas 1818's better. I've got a coule of sets of Martin SP's on standby right now. I'm going to try the lights on the slothead, and the mediums on the Millenium.
How long did the Elixers last you? For the money, the D'add EXP16's seem good. This guitar doesn't benifit as much as others from heavier guage strings IMHO. Mind you, I'm not changing the setup to get the most out of the strings either. |

I not quite sure how long they lasted... They sounded fine the last time I took this "ice cream cone" out and played (a couple months ago) but when I took it out to play last night, yuck! Dead as a doornail. They usually last pretty well though. If I play everyday on the same set, I would say they last a month or so. Thing is, I take a guitar out for a week or so, then put it away and pull out a "new best friend". Sometimes I don't get back to the first one for months. Maybe I should sell all but 2 or 3 so they get played more often. NOT!!! So many flavors, but only so much time... |

Location: Orange County, California | I think the Elixers sounded no different than they did new (Dead), and you just didn't remeber...
If you only play them for a week, then put them away for a month, I would buy boxes of whatever you can get for under $3 a set, and change them out everytime you play. :D :p :D . they will last just as long as if you played expensive strings all month, and you'll always have that "Fresh new string" feeling. |

Location: Cherry Hill, NJ | If you don't mind changing strings often, go for a good phosphor bronze. I use Elixer nanos on all my guitars. I just tried their phosphor bronze nanos, and they sound great, but the price is a bit high. One thing I've learned with the newer coated strings is that they may play tight, no flexibility at any gauge. I had that problem with the Alchemy Gold strings. I haven't tried the D'Addiaro EXP's yet. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Fred, what do you use on your 1763 again? I'm too lazy to search for your detailed analysis and I'm overdue to change my 1713. It took a couple months for the strings to settle in after I bought it. They were flat every time I picked it up. Seems like by the time they quit doing that they went dead. |

Location: Anchorage, Alaska | I just put a set of the Elixer Phosphor Bronze nano's (since I had them already) but I'm not real excited about them. I just might have to go back to the original DiAdario's. I don't think that guitar has sounded as good as it did the first day out of the box!!! |

Try the Savarex 520P1 set. They settle pretty quick, last a long time, and surprisingly, time after time, I don't think they actually sound that bad, until I change them again, then I know. |

| I know I'm probably being lazy - but where does the model number U681t come from?
And who dreamt this guitar up - the other 3 anniversary guitars are re-issues so where did the idea for "Der Panzer" come from?
It is a seriously wonderful guitar - I'm thinking it's waaaaaaaay too good for me. But I shall let it stay for a while. |

T = textured top
Rumor is that U681 was an attempt to roll out the best possible acoustic sound (the 2 protos plus my U681 are acoustic only). Maybe in response to the fever on this board for deep bowl, non cutaways, 12 fret slotheads.
Personally, I think they made it as the adamas version of the FD14.

Well, they didn't miss by much, did they? :D
It really is THE most fantastic guitar. It just makes me feel that all the things I can't play are my fault. This is not really a characteristic I like in a guitar. It could be a little more modest and say "sorry, my fault" once in a while.
I can't imagine any guitar from a comparable volume builder making this thing look or sound second best.
Stupid question (from my 12 year old daughter) - is that real gold in the sparkle? (answer please)
