About twice a month I have to take a strip 220 emery cloth and sand down my fingertips. You too?

I use a fingernail buffer. One side has a super fine grit and the other side buffs. Cool.

Yes Brian, decorum must be maintained. Still, we all know what you were gonna say. Or do we?
One good way to build callouses is by playing a bass for a week. That'll toughen those digits.

Yep round wounds on a bass will make em grow fast! Personally I leave them alone and pull off the little circle of dead skin when it gets annoying!
Other than that only modifications I need to make are the correct fingernail length on my right index & middle for string pickn.

I got no trouble growing 'em. But it gets to the point where they catch on the strings.

I use the fingernail shaper/buffer. Still hard to get rid of the grooves.

Am I in the minority that I pick with just the meat of the fingers and not the nail?

Nope. But I bite my nails, and have done since I got teeth. Every now and then I try to stop, but it's just too ingrained now! Never had any complains about my picking (unless you count people's complaints about the songs I pick...)

When I was gigging painfully regularly (twice weekly, minimum) every now and then, I'd tip some candle wax onto brown paper and press my left hand fingers in - got the circle off, kept everything clean, and help keep em tough. Don't feel the need to do that any more, though.

I've developed a mighty callous on my thumb, which seems to do most of the work. Not a problem, it's almost to the point where it sounds like a thumbpick. Not really an issue for my fretting hand.

I've made a few attempts at nails on my right hand, but then something moderately stressful comes up, like watching a football game, and I bite them off. They are also a pain when digging in the dirt or working on cars. And if they aren't all the same length it sounds funny. Maybe I'll try fingerpicks, but I couldn't get used to them before.

Never thought of just how uch everyone has a different strategy for picking? I actually used to bite my fingernails all the time to do a quick fix and get them short enough to not hang up on the strings but long enough so I get the fingertips to make 50% of the contact. That often left jagged edges that would change the sound until they wore down a little while playing.
Now I actually use an old Nail file my wife had kicking around and I shape the nails on my pickin fingers so they are a little long near the middle but flattened out near the side this way I can actually get two different sounds while playing if needed.

That was most likely more personal hygene information than anyone needed !

short nails on the left hand, never worry about the callouses. Long nails on the right, super glue and acrylic powder to strengthen the index and middle. Need to file them down every 10 days or so, reglue them about every three weeks.

I keep nails short all around and generally prefer playing without a pick (for strumming as well as picking). Superglue works great in keeping the thumb callous intact for a few more songs before it rips off. I'll have to try mixing it with acrylic, sounds interesting.

(...w2, I've also used the nail hardner on the right hand 3rd and 4th fingernails...but never tried super glue and acrylic powder...that's some serious chemistry there...)
