Could anyone share with me the year that Ovation began offering their guitars in colors. I own a GC1618-2 which would be a 1977 model according to the chart. Thanks for any info anyone can offer.

Can't help you with that, but welcome to the board.

I bought my Viper somewhere in the 70's pretty close to the same time.

Hi,

According the price lists and catalogs, the first colors for acoustics were Natural(-4) and Sunburst(-1) some years later (71/72???).

Some information more about the colors:

1975: the Balladeer was the first model to be available in White(-6).

1977: the Custom Balladeer and Legend were available in Red(-2)

1979: the 1651 Legend Ltd is avalaible in Nutmeg(-7) and is the first Ovation Stereo.

1980: the Anniversary (1157 & 1657) were only available in Natural & Nutmeg/Antique Brown(-7)

The Blue color(-8) seems to be used for the first time on the 1982 Collector's model.

The Black color(-5) has appeared in 1983/84 for the first time for Custom Balladeer, Legend, Custom Legend and Elite 1537.

1989/90: Legend, Custom legend, Elite and Classic were awailable in White.

1993: seems to be the first year for Cedar Top (-C) and Angel Step Walnut(-ASW).

1994: Cherry Cherryburst(-CCB),Tobacco(-TB),Vintage (-V), Amber(-AM), Cadillac Green(-CG) and Root Beer(-RB) appears for the first time in catalogs.

1995: Elite Std in Vitage Orange(-V)

1996: the Legend model was available in Cadillac Greenburst(-CGB), Elite Std in Iced Coffee(-IC)and Antique Red (-ANR).

1997: Black Cherryburst is introduced for Elite Models.

1999: Aspen Blue(-ASB) and Black Cherryburst(-BCB) for Elite Std.

After 2000: Autumn Burst(-AB) for Elite Std, Textured Top (-T + X color) for Special Balladeer and much more colors.

These informations are only for US Acoustic & EA models.
I've tried to be as accurate as possible but there's probably some mistakes in dates.
So please excuse me by advance...

J :)

PS: I've made a color chart with all the colors I've found on the web: http://www.ovationtribute.com/Ovation%20&%20Adamas%20Colors/Ovation...

...also, I remember a USA Longneck with a 'tobaccoburst' finish, perhaps it was only a custom order guitar, not a production guitar...

thanks for all the feedback, I called the original owner this morning and he said that he ordered the 1618-2GC in mid year 1976 after seeing Bobby Goldsboro playing a red ovation. According to him, at that time they did not want to do a G.Campbell model in red but he was persistant and they finally gave in and took the order.

Thanks Purple Flame,

It will be great to send me a pic of this color.

If anyone have a pic of a color who's not on the chart, please feel free to send me a pic.
I'll be glad to add it on the page.

J :)
