Can someone educate me (shut up Cliff). We've all seen, or at least seen photos, the wood room at Ovations factory. Thousands of wood slats all stacked up and waiting to be turned into soundboards. But what actually happens BEFORE the wood gets to Ovation? I don't think Frank goes out with a chainsaw and harvests his own wood. So how does it happen? Some company cuts the trees and then what? Do Ovation, Martin, Taylor all buy their wood from the same mill? Is there anything donw to it at the mill that makes it special? Just really curious what the chain of events is that gets a tree turned into stock in Ovations wood room. Dave

I imagine the company bids on lots from trusted tonewood lumber manufacturers, who have selected, cut, seasoned, and stored the material for a certain amount of time. Kaman probably has several sources, domestic and foreign. Maybe an insider could provide us with some detailed and accurate information. Good question. Buck

I guess if the next OFC tour is going to be complete, we need to meet in the woods.

Whole or even parts of trees are graded; Instrument grade, furniture grade, construction grade, etc and buyers for those grades purchase the approprite lumber from rough mills for their clients. Even chips and scraps are bought to manufacture engineered wood products like OSB or "particle board".

I spoke with one of the execs at Peavey and he actually goes to brazil and africa to look at the wood. Exactly what he's looking for, or whether the wood is already sawn, I imagine it is, but I didn't bother to ask, because I thought, man, what a cool job. I imagine Kaman has someone to do this, or contracts it out.
PS I like the Peavey construction, but not the sound the guitars make. Just not my taste.
