My bridge is lifted on one side should I immediately stop playing and get it repaired - Is the bridge firmly attached or glued

Glued on most, if not all. Also bolted on some. Loosen the strings and get it fixed.

If the bridge is lifting, it's not firmly attached. It needs to be reglued, sooner or later. It might not have to be completely removed to be repaired. Have it looked at by a competent person.

It should not be bolted. The bridge should be glued. Other than some archtops, and some old timey guitars, bridges are glued on. I've never seen a balladeer bridge that was not glued, but I could be wrong.

I did not know that. I do know that I've never seen one. Are you saying that the 4861 has a bolt on bridge? That's what the man has. I think it's a Balladeer. I've had guitars with floating bridges, held in place by string tension like my Gretsch, but not any bolted ones. I'd like to see one, any idea which models have them? Buck

My Custom Balladeer is bolted on. I assume it's glued, too. It has a couple of finish cracks that come out from the bolts.

If it has two pearloid dots on the bridge...it's bolted.

If the bridge appears to be lifting, this could mean the soundboard is distended, which could mean the bracing has failed....

Take her to the ER.

I'm not sure what models are bolted or not. Quick look around the closet Book Elite, Elite 12, and 1537 and definately bolted. Dave

After reading Jeffs' post, I noticed that my Matrix has pearl dots on the bridge. It just might be bolted. Next time I change strings I'll check it out. Don't they trust their glues dudes?

Just because there are dots doesn't necessarily mean that there are screws under them. Some just have dots, when the change over was being made from bridges with screws to no screws some bridges went out with just dots as a way to use up some bridge stock. There weren't a lot of them done that way but there were some. All bridges are glued down whether there were screws or not.As far as the bridge lift goes, if it's only a small lift on a corner it could stay like that for years, now if it's lifting from the back side of the bridge I would get that taken care of right away.

A bridge reset $50 (Dallas Guitar Repair) Ovation certified. He is also going to set it up for me and give it the once over. I figure its gonna end up between 100 and 150 when its done. The sound was so rich I just hope that this wont affect that.

Welcome to the board, and thanks for the information.

That cost would not be excessive to save a good guitar. You might ask the repair person if they can determine what caused he damage. My guess is exposure to temperature and humidity, but that is only a guess. Ovations are generally pretty tough guitars, and don't fail under normal, or near noemal, conditions.

All of us need to know what causes that kind of failure if it can be known.

the original owner was a WI college student - So I can only assume that it was temp and drug related. I plan on taking a little better care of it than he did
