This is also true for the other half of Campbell and Hare. (I suppose I could blame him: Every time he breaks a G string, I end up breaking one the next time we play.) Maybe it's kind of like the fact that the middle finger is the one most likely to be injured and require a splint or large bandage. . . . Is there something about G strings that makes them more prone to breakage, or is there something about technique?

Here are specifications for a typical set I use: E 1st Plain Steel .011 Tension 19.9 lbs B 2nd Plain Steel .015 Tension 20.5 lbs G 3rd Bronze Round Wound .024 Tension 29.6 lbs D 4th Bronze Round Wound .032 Tension 28.9 lbs A 5th Bronze Round Wound .043 Tension 28.2 lbs E 6th Bronze Round Wound .052 Tension 24.2 lbs The standard answer to "Why do I break strings?" If the path from tuning mechanism to bridge saddle/bridge pin (better with an Ovation 'cause there are no pins!) is un-obstructed with nothing that binds, you ought not to break strings or have tuning problems (no burrs or sharp edges to bind or grind away at a string). There is also something to be said for high quality, fresh strings, too. In my experience, some brands, without naming names, break more easily than others.
