Hi there, been looking at a new guitar for a Xmas pressie, for the wife.
NO I am not doing a swap for her!
Got the chance of a Legend 1777 in natural colour with an OP24 Plus C electronics. Is this a new guitar, been sitting in the shop for a bit or other?
What would you guys think about it as a purchase, how much would you expect to pay and do you think it is a worthwhile guitar for a tinkerer?

I cannot give advise on pricing but if it a USA made Ovation that is affordable it would be a good choice.
Also....please go to this website and add youself to the OFC map! OFC member map

A good guitar, shouldn't be new, unless it is New Old Stock. I have a 1777 of 2003 vintage and it has an OP-40 pre-amp.

I'd think $500-$550 would be about right, in good clean condition. Any more than that, and I'd be going after a NEW 1771LX instead(I have one of those, too).

Hi this guitar is definitely new with the OP24 Plus C preamp, all current details on the Ovation site say that it should have the OP40. Does this mean that the guitar has been hanging about for a long time? Is it worth considering?
UK pricing is approx $1.00 = £1.00 due to taxes. The exchange rate is approx £1.00 = $1.4 so should I be looking at something cheaper elsewhere? They are asking £900.00 which might be negotiable but do not know by how much. Certaonly not down to $500.00 - $550.00.

On something like a guitar, you really should let your wife pick it out. It's romantic and all to suprise someone, but a guitar is really a subjective thing, and personal preferences play a huge role.

Buy her a nice one, dont be cheap, get a good one but let her choose it, and she will value it a hopefully play it the rest of her days.

Surprise her with sleezy underware or a blender or something.

Brian makes a good point. She should either choose the guitar, or you can choose one for her and make her believe it's her choice. If she picks it out she'll get what she wants. She might be more likely to practice, and play "her" guitar.

Sorry, hiflier, I missed that you are in Scotland....obviously $500-$550 is NOT correct for you.

YES, I'd say the guitar has been hanging about. 900 pound is a NEW price, I would say. You might look around.

I think BrianT has a good point...let HER pick it out. Otherwise, you are in danger of selling it and buying another fairly quickly.

I'm with Brian, my wife let me pick out our first Ovation a month before we got married. It was a lot of money back then, $245, but it and our marriage are doing well after 28 years. I haven't been able to get her to buy me a guitar since, though. Just like a lot of things that change once you get married.

So, Mark, doing the math means that you got that guitar in 1977. Looking at your sig, unless that Matrix is the "our first Ovation", you sold it.

Maybe that's why she hasn't bought you another guitar!!??

Yes I agree that it has to be a personal choice, so I had her go through lotsa shops on the pretext of buying a guitar for my son, he was there too. Whilst we were in the shops she was obliged to try the various guitars my son was interested in and was pointed in the direction of the Ovations as she had always wanted one. Unfortunately for me she decided that the one she liked the most was NOT one of the cheaper ones.
What I really wanted to know was whether the LEGEND with the OP24 Plus C preamp was a current model or if you think it must have been lurking around the shop for some time and "is it a good one to buy?"

VERY nice guitar. Nothing wrong with the preamp either. I like the LOOKS of the preamp too. The OP40 looks like it belongs on a drum machine or some kind of toy. Has it heen hanging there a while? Yes. Make him an offer and see what happens.

What's the store asking for the guitar? Everybody here is correct in that it's a real good guitar. For whatever reason, it's a late 90's early '00's guitar. But the OP 24 is a great preamp. Don't have any hesitation over that.

ttenn,
We bought the guitar new in 1977 and I thought it was built then, but the serial number list says it is a 1976. I found that out a couple years ago when my neighbor was trying to sell me his 1977 Legend. I told my wife I needed one that was really built the year we were married, but she didn't agree. She thinks the one "she" bought is good enough.

Let her choose the guitar and make sure you give her some advise on how good of a guitar she's looking to purchase, some guitars have good looks but have bad quality or combination of wood.and give her all the support on playing guitar,GOOD PLAYING to you ALL'''
