Any strong opinions between a 1990 Elite #1758 vs. a 1985 Custom Legend #1759. They seem to be very comparable, at least on the surface - mostly an aestethic question between the round soundhole and the epualets...though I'm sure there are some additional nuances that are worth considering! Your thoughts and wise counsel are greatly appreciated. All the best~ :)

I have been pestering Al about a Custom Elite Contour bowl LX 12 string natural top (with a compass stock). I prefer the multihole over the mono-hole. I should stick with Wood tops until I get to build what Stephen28 and I really want...

I've got a few Q's into Billy, and will certainly pull a trigger if I sense I've got the cross-hairs dialed in! Any opinions on the "blind comparison" - sound and feel? I'm guessing they'd be almost identical if the actions were set the same. On the other hand - if I were blind, I wouldn't be able to appreciate all that juju-bling!

I've played a few duds along the way. Not sure why, but a few that I've played didn't have the bass response I was looking for. My sunburst model just growls, absolutely wonderful. My natural has more of a jangly sound. All things aside, the CL does have a higher grade of spruce, which does have a chance to sound better. The only negative I can say about the 1758's in my experience, which comes out to about a dozen I have seen and played in my lifetime, is that most if not all tend to have that bridge pulling, wavy wood behind the bridge issues, especially late 80's early 90's. Mine is no exception, my 1758-1 had to be send back to be "re-braced"...not sure what they did, but it straigtened out the wavyness and they did not change the top.. In spite of these issues, i still love both of mine. hope this helps.. Ernie

I laid down last night however, and pondered the question in my mind "why do I really need a 12 string?" I'm still asking myself that question, and I'm still poised to pull the trigger. So do me a favor and buy them both NOW!!!!

The shallow plays wonderful and sounds great plugged in, but it's no match for the CL acoustically. I agree with Woody, I'd think any serious player would want to have at least one on hand.

I really don't have the experience of comparing the two, but I would think the sound quality would be equivelent due to the simular materials used. HOWEVER ... after reading a previous extensive posting on the Elite tops, using plywood to either reinforce the upper bout or enhance the upper-end frequencies, and considering the possible difference in bracing, there MAY be a difference in tonal ranges between the two models. (food for thought) I might even venture to say the deep bowl legend could have a more volume on the lower end. ??? What do ya think??

Try one at your local music store. 12 string acoustics are by nature, more difficult to finger than 6's. The LX 12, with its superior neck features, and brighter sound, covers it all. I own one, and chose it out of more expensive models and makes.

Joined: July 2003 Posts: 1922 Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | Buy-It-Now option is gone on the 1758....I don't understand why the seller bothered....first bid gets rid of the B-I-N option since there's no reserve. Opening was $1.00, so it was a no-brainer to throw a bid to get rid of the B-I-N, and hope it stays low. So it's here for 6 more days, unless someone makes an offer the seller can't refuse.... He said he was going to contact the Ebay help desk to get the feature back on there. That may actually help you though if you are going to bid on it. It'll keep someone from plucking it off the auction block early.

Joined: July 2003 Posts: 1922 Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | The seller will have to put a reserve on the guitar to put a Buy-It-Now on it....first bid removes it otherwise!!! There seems no point from a seller's point-of-view to put Buy-It-Now on an item if you don't have a reserve, UNLESS your opening bid is fairly significant to start with. A $1.00 opening bid doesn't warrant it....the B-I-N will disappear quickly. Yes, if one is an interested buyer, getting rid of a Buy-It-Now is always a good idea!!! Except that someone could always take Stephen's approach.....(but when I sell, I always decline those offers). Roger
