Location: New Hampsha | For the historians out there: I've been looking through the reference sections and searches and wasn't having much luck. Lotsa questions:
Is there an Ovation serial number "one" out there?
Were there several number "ones" depending on the model or line?
The reference section starts with serial number 006; Why? What happened to numbers one through five?
If serial number one exists, who's the lucky guy who owns it?
Is this like the Holy Grail or has it already been found? |

What were numbers 1-5? Storms? I have a storm with serial number 015 and a really wickedly cool neck bolt cover made by a true artisan :-) - could it really be the tenth one ever made? |

That is an interesting number for your storm guitar but the fifteenth instrument Ovation ever made seems to be way too early for a storm. I've heard of three digit #'s but most I have seen are from A-XXX on up.
Any of the true historians have any opinions on this?

I listed my serial numbers with StandingO's serial number registry and was struck by the low serial number. The next lowest number for a storm was in the 600's. That's what got me started. I've looked at that serial number so hard, looking for signs it was altered or a digit or alpha was missing, but it seems correct and original, but I'm no expert. Did Ovation start over on the serial numbers when they introduced a new model? |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I had gone round and round with this with another OFC member who has done more early serial number research than anyone I know. He can tell you the manufacturer of the paper used for the labels! Anyway, the best we can collectively deduce is that the storm numbers started at 000. But some 9 months or so after the acoustics. So there are duplicate serial numbers acoustics and storms through the 3 digit series They are hand written serial numbers for the first period and then switched to typed numbers. With the start of the A-xxx series the storms and acoustics no longer share numbers. As far as Mitz's guitar I would say that it's most likily the 15th storm built. But certainly not the 15th ovation in total. |

Location: New Hampsha | Standing O - thanks for the insight. The number on my label is handwritten, so that fits the pattern/theory. I thought this was a mongrel Tornado that had T'Head hardware, But I suppose anything's possible with early releases? This thing just oozes character out of its' pores and wins over everyone who picks it up. It's a keeper, and if it has some history, that just makes it even cooler to me. Thanks! |
