Hello all,
I am wondering how long one should allow a guitar to warm up after it has been shipped. Tomorrows temp is sapposed to be 45 degrees. Most say an hour. I take it out of the shipping box but not out of the case.

Thanks,

Bill

If you're worried, just toss in a thermometer, and when it gets to whatever temp you would feel comfortable playing the guitar is done.

45 degrees though really isn't an issue. Worry when it gets below freezing. Then just let the case warm up for an hour or two. But 45, don't worry. Give it 15 to 30 mins. You know, people play outside in that temperature. I have.

The problem might not be the temperature itself, but a sudden, meaningful change in temperature. A sudden 20 degree difference might be create stress as different parts warm up at different speeds. Let it warm up slowly to darn near room temperature just to be safe.
Over cautious??? maybe. But like chicken soup...It couldn't hurt.

Try playing outside when it is 110. 45 is cold for a winter night here.

A. let it warm up to the same temperature as the room it's in.

B. Wait as long as you can and then rip open the box and just play the guitar, usually this is about 5 minutes.

The best way to transfer body heat is to remove your clothes...

This also works when taking pictures of shiny objects for sale on Ebay!

Enjoy your new aquisition! With or without your clothes on!

UPS once delivered a guitar to my front door in the winter and just left it there. When I arrived at the house, there was the box ... sitting with snow on it. :( After taking it inside and letting it sit in the box and case for 2 hours, I opened it and there was a nasty 12" finish crack accross the whole top. To say I was ticked is an understatement. It took me three weeks to get an insurance claim through, then another 4 months to get it back from a luthier with a new OILED finish with new epaulets. (I know ... I probably should have shipped it to Ovation but didn't know at the time that I could) Anyway ... in the end it sounded a lot better (louder) without all that laquer on the top.

Another happy ending to a bad story. They do sound better with less finish.
