Steve Oliver recorded John Lennon's "Imagine" for his 3D CD. For today only, he's offering it as a free download on his site, if anyone is interested. It's a nice nylon string version of the song by a good guitarist.

Muzak crap. JL would probably be hating that. Imagine was about the words ... not some cheesey synth drums and some programmed ooh's and aahh's. It's not an honor to Lennon, it's some cheap publicity stunt for yet another boring collection of uninspired Christmas songs. Man, I hate it when assholes do things like this "to honor" John Lennon. But I'm sure John would have forgiven Mr. Oliver ... he was a far better man than I.

Gee stoney...what do you really think?
But I understand what your saying.
A fingerstyle guy got up at the open mic a couple months ago and announced he was going to play "Come Together". I thought oh boy...this might be a train wreck. But no...he rocked it. And I think the reason he rocked it was he felt it. Fingerstyle can sometimes be about as emotional as an algebra equation.
And there I times I sure wish I could do it.

Stoney,
I understand where you're coming from but keep this in mind too. the download was free to honor John Lennon. No one was forced to buy anything at his site. Perhaps he did this song as a tribute because he doesnt sing or he plays better than he sings. at any rate. It's not the first time that an Instrumnetal version of the song has been done. Chet atkins did one as well. While it's true that The lyrics to imagine invoke some powerful images and a tremendous message. If you were sitting in a quiet place just thinking about john, and lighting a candle or saying a prayer in his honor...listening to the melody or instrumental version of a Lennon Song send chills down my Spinne. John loved Music and art,..heck he might have been touched by hearing an instrumental version of the song. Then again, he also might wonder why anyone would want to play his songs. he was kind of funny that way.
God, I miss him.

Well put, Steve. As I said in my original post, the song was on his "3D" CD. Not the Christmas one. He just offered it now as a tribute on the day Lennon was shot.

As for the commercialism/publicity stunt part, Paul McCartney was quoted as saying: "Somebody said to me, 'But the Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool.'"

I don't mind Oliver recording the song, in his own style. That's fine ... we all play Beatles/Lennon tunes the way we want to play them. There are great covers, and crappy covers, everywhere. No doubt Oliver has more talent in his pinky than I ever hope to have in my wildest dreams. This just wasn't time/place/intent appropriate. Yesterday was a very significant date for those profoundly impacted by all that Lennon was. It's the "honor John Lennon by sending me money" attitude that pisses me off. I know, I know, you didn't have to buy anything but it's the intent that's wrong ... and it was a cheap publicity stunt. He should've put it on a page by itself if his motives were pure. People that like his style could have then gone deeper into his catalog. The order of comments in my prior diatribe didn't accurate reflect their priority in my mind ... but I was a bit miffed at the time.

Know the feeling Stone. Something gets up your nose, there's no need to hold back in a free society.

And it feels better to vent than hold it in.

Everyone stands witness to the world in their own way.

Finally listened to it, nice enough. Peaceful.
Reminds me more of 'Living Strings' Than Django Reinhardt but... that's my taste.

Once again,I understand where you're coming from Stoney. Hope I didn't sound like I was attacking you for your comments. If it was taken that way, I do appologize. That certainly wasn't my intent.Fillhixx said it best.. it does feel better to vent than to hold it in.

I believe too that Imagine is a word song. But John Lennon was a guitarist as well as song writer. I can't help believing that he would have loved listening to Chet Atkins version of his song.

Somewhere at home I have a Chet Atkins CD with his version of "Imagine" on it. The Steve Oliver version is clearly derivative of Chet's. He copied several of Chet's licks directly, but he also added his own twist.

Personally, I never liked Lennon. In every interview with him I have ever read or seen, he strikes me as a pretentious, self-important ass (sorry...I don't mean to offend...just calling them like I see them). McCartney, on the other hand, always struck me as more down to earth.

IMHO, people will still be singing "Yesterday" long after "Imagine" has been forgotten.

Cheers!

Jeff

Appreciate you clarifying your comments, stonebobo. Steve Oliver had posted on his site several days earlier, on the home page, that he would be offering the song off his "3D" CD on Dec 8th as a tribute to Lennon, and acknowledged Lennon's influence on his music. It's just too bad that he posted it on his "digital downloads" page, where the holiday CD was also available. Poor positioning, for sure.

Based on the things I've read about Steve in interviews, etc, I'd like to think that his intentions were sincere, and that the placement of the download was more likely influenced by marketing/publicity people and web designers, rather than the artist, who's probably too busy with his music to micromanage web site activities.

Your opinion and welcome to it....

.....come backstage here, there's something I'd like to show ya......

Actually, there was a time that knowing who thier favourite Beatle was, explained as much about a person as you could ever hope to know. John, the angry young intellectual; Paul, the beautiful one with a simple love of melody; George, the deep philosophical one; and Ringo, everybodys friend.
