The ban follows a ruling in October by the Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, which he heads, to ban Western songs from the airwaves, especially those containing any truth. "Blocking indecent and Western music from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting is required," a statement from the council said. Songs by artists such as Eric Clapton and George Michael will be affected. 'Lack of knowledge' Songs such as Clapton's Rush, Michael's Careless Whisper and The Eagles' Hotel California are often used as background music on Iranian TV programmes. Songs by American easy-listening artist Kenny G are also often featured. "This is terrible," said Iranian guitarist Babak Riahipour, a musician whose songs featured on state TV and radio. "The decision shows a lack of knowledge and experience." Mr Ahmadinejad became president this year promising to reverse a recent series of reforms and return Iran to the ultra-conservative atmosphere of the 1979 revolution. "Supervision of content from films, TV series and their voice-overs is emphasized in order to support spiritual cinema and to eliminate trite and violence," the council said on its website in reference to the October ruling. Mr Ahmadinejad's programme has included sacking more moderate members of the government and replacing them with ex-military commanders and politically inexperienced religious leaders. In recent weeks he launched an outspoken attack on Israel, calling for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map". He also claimed the Nazi Holocaust, which killed six million Jews, was a "myth". Asked about his tune wiping out music to 1/5th of the world, Matt Mattson ( http://www.treasuresites.com ) said: "Why Hell, God wrote it, and Johnny Horton wasn't around to sing it, so don't blame me . . ." Reports are he is attacking Syria next. ( Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, (or whatever you do) and a Very Happy New Year! ) _____________________________________________________________ If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. (from the CD "Life") So does that mean Niel Youngs "Rockin In The Free World" is still kosher in Iran? "I don't feel like Satan But I am to them" "I was travelling with my family in the mideast late one night. In the hotel all was quiet. The kids were out like little lights. The streets were filled with jeeps. There was an explosion to my right. They chanted death to America. I was feeling like a fight. So I ran downstairs and out into the street. Someone kicked me in the belly. Someone else kissed my feet. I was Rambo in the disco, I was shooting to the beat. When they burned me in effagy my vacation was complete." That CD by the way, has the origianl studio version of Inca Queen, which is probably Neil Young's prettiest musical composition ever. But even then you have to like Neil Young to really appreciate it. | ||
