Location: Waurika OK | Is there a processor that will give that smooth jazz guitar sound?
I really like the sound and looks of a jazz guitar, the Hamer Improv for instance. The so-called jazz guitars that I can afford would probably be a disappointment. |

For a while, I was twiddling the parameters on my GNX4 and came up with a patch that made my Steinberger GP (how I miss that one) sound pretty close, but not close enough. When I played the Hamer (and that one even more) through that patch, though it got pretty muddy.
Now that I'm thinking about it, though, maybe you're not after that woody, ES175, Barney Kessel sound I was trying to get. What do you mean when you say 'smooth jazz sound?'
As far as jazz boxes, go, yes, the Improv is quite impressive (the specs and the pics, haven't had the pleasure in person, sadly), but don't discount those less expensive gits, either. If you check out the rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz usenet group, there are pro and semi-pro players there who will tell you that some of the Washburn, Oscar Schmidt, Jay Turser and especially Ibanez (in the $500-$1000 range) are quite nice for what you get, requiring only a setup, pickup swap and strings. ;) I was smitten by an Ibanez AF105 at the local mom and pop...fantastic fit and finish, super acoustic sound, nailed the jazz tone I wanted when plugged into the right amp, and it was only $600. Front, back and sides were all flame maple, done in natural; quite the killer. Then I came across the G&L Junior. Not the same thing, but...you know how GAS is. :) |

That is the sound that I am looking for.
I had and Ibanez AS120 Artstar, it was a beautiful guitar, red with gold hardware. But, I just couldn't get the sound I wanted, the pups on those are pretty hot.
I am watching some with a floating pickup, that is the style that appeals to me.
I'll check out the AF105

Location: Waurika OK | Checked out the AF105, appears to be what I am looking for, single floating pickup and the right style.
A couple on eBay, but I will probably shop around where I can get my hands on one to try out. Greatneck guitars in Wichita Falls, TX is an Ibanez dealer and I have dealt with them before.

Location: Midland, MI | Is the AS120 a 335-style guitar, Xnoel? If it is, I wonder how much of a difference that makes in getting the sound you're after. The AF105 is a full-bodied guitar (as you've seen), and it comes in both dual routed buckers and the floating neck bucker version (so watch what you're bidding on). Let me know what you think when/if you get to check one out. I was impressed and was this close >< to picking it up...but... |

| If you want the sound of a Super 400 without spending automobile type money, buy a Variax. The super 4 model is absolutely awesome - it even sounds like its got flat wound strings. And if you stick it through a Line 6 amp on a twin reverb setting it sounds like every old jazz man you want to sound like. I kid you not - it is unbelieveable. The best modelling I ever heard. |
