From the auction: " One of the most convincing details is the nicely rendered OVATION logo on the head piece." ROTFLMAO!! :D :p :D :p

Bill doesn't need to dignify this piece of crap with a comment. It's bogus, end of story.

It has a lot of similarities to the lower level Wooden Roundbacks from Indonesia. The Bridge looks to be a softer variety of Ebony or Acacia.

Check the Stripes in the neck.

I bet that Dave has the catalog that the logo came out of.

Here's a reply from the seller when I inquired if this might be of indonesian origin:
"FYI my friend acquired this instrument about 20 years ago, way before the glut of Eastern knockoffs. If you look at the picture of the Ovation workshop on the ovation historical website, you see something very similar to what is being offered here. Sorry, it will take more than superficial opinions to change my evaluation of this instrument. Also, did you ever hear of a knock off being supplied with an alternate sound hole rosette? I really think that once you saw this instrument in person, the validity of the theory offered as to the instrument's origin would be instantly accepted. Besides, it looks like a twenty year old instrument. You really think Ovations were being knocked off while still in the developement stage? I'm afraid this is all that I can offer at this time. If I receive a bonefide communication from Ovation with a serious inquiry or explanation of what this instrument really is, I will copy you at once, regardless of the ir opinion. Thanks for your interest. LAAF"

"Besides, it looks like a twenty year old instrument. You really think Ovations were being knocked off while still in the developement stage?"-- from LAAF's reply.

Cool! That that means my 33 year-old Ovation must be a protype of the protype. Before they changed-over to that ugly headstock logo. I'm Rich!!

BTW the headstock logo is crooked.

I might mention that for less than the opening bid price you can own a genuine original slothead. Check with cholloway.

Reminds me, I have the Mint, Vintage, Original solid chrome plated tuners to the Official WRB in a bin. They are just like these.

Bidding starts at $599.99, no reserve!

So A)Someone was fed a line of crap and ran with it or B)Someone has made up a line of crap and put an extremely high opening bid on it!

Auction copy edited:

NOTE: ALTHOUGH I WAS SINCERELY CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS A LEGITIMATE OVATION PROTOTYPE, I HAVE SINCE RECEIVED EQUALLY CONVINCING EMAILS WHICH DESCRIBE THIS AS A MEXICAN BACKED OVATION KNOCKOFF. THE EMAIL ALSO PROVIDED CONVINCING INFORMATION WHICH DESCRIBED THE EARLY OVATION EFFORTS AT BACK CONSTRUCTION WHICH NEVER INVOLVED THE USE OF WOODEN BACKS, ONLY WOODEN MOLDS. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF CONTACTING MY CLIENT AND MOST LIKELY WE WILL EITHER DROP THE MINIMUM OR WITHDRAW THE LISTING. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR CONCERNS.

The round back is not one piece. The flat sides are attatched to the round bottom at that point.
