With the passing of James Brown, who I truly view as a true original and not one to ever be "replaced", I have to ask you members - who would you put on that "Could never be replaced" plateau? And feel free to stretch the box into any genre and any discipline. Some thoughts to go along with James...

Jimi, SRV, Etta, Ray Charles, Lennon, Jim Croce, Marvin Gaye, Chet, John Bonham, Elvis, Sam Cooke...

Your additions...?

Glen Campbell....

....Merle Haggard (another original) once said of Glen, "If there was ever someone that God gave too much talent it would be Glen".....

I agree,Glen is a complete entertainer!

Hard to believe nobody's mentioned Paul McCartney. I just watched the DVD of his 2005 tour. Simply amazing, 3 generations of people singing along with EVERY FREAKING SONG.

Someone held up a sign that read, "My grandma saw you at Candlestick Park".

Can't think of anyone not already mentioned...
But I am thinking of musicians who only be mentioned by first name...

Jimi, Janis, John, Jerry...

In the 80's, right after John Lennon passed, Jim Croce passed without much notice. Pissed a friend of mine off terribly. He searched the radio, but no station even gave him a one-hour retrospective. Not a great guitarist, but definitely a notable songwriter.

Last night OPB (our PBS) showed the Crossroads Guitar Festival with Eric Clapton, BB King, Joe Walsh, dozens of others that are legends. And Carlos Santana can't be replaced either.
I'm done.

I'm with you, Waskel. If there's such a thing as an elder statesman of rock & roll, he's gotta be it. Great singer, composer, musician, and humanitarian. The man has worn his fame very well, IMHO.
