Memphis is a dump! Everytime I hear songs like "Walkin' in Memphis", I think; "I know you've never been there, you just heard the name!" The reason why it's called the Delta Blues is cuz the people had THE BLUES!! Memphis is still a ghetto. They (realtors) keep "revitalizing" the old neighborhoods. Buy up old houses, then none of the old residents can afford to live there. Just move the poor folks.

Playing "Walkin' in Memphis" is the closest I've gotten. In light of Old Man Arthur's post, that's likely to be it.

I visited Graceland a couple of years ago. It's a deeply depressing and tacky experience. Also went to Sun Records which was great, and the magnificent Peabody hotel. Apart from that I have to agree with Arthur, Memphis is a dump. We almost got rolled outside a gas station, fortunately my buddy who grew up a few blocks from Beale St saw it coming and got us out of there fast.

I have been. I remember that we were taking the tour, and I had to go to the bathroom really bad. I managed to find a bathroom, but it wasn't one we were supposed to use, apparently. It smelled so bad, I was like, "Who died in here?"

Okay, seriously. I have been, and yes, it was tacky, but I was expecting tacky, so I didn't mind. I found the tour fairly interesting. They give you one of those headsets that you start and stop.

Also went to the Lorraine Hotel.

We found some interesting things to do, but yes, it was a bit of a dump.

I walked through Graceland about a year ago. The impressive part is not the house itself, but getting a sense of the sheer magnitude of Elvis' career. Tacky? Perhaps, but they left the house exactly as it was in 1977 so you get all that fashionable wierdness of the time. Tacky defines the interior of Elvis's plane.

Beale Street is a good place to spend some time ... lots of good music played there. If you like blues. And barbeque.

Just got back from a trip to Memphis and San Antonio

Graceland was interesting the main house was crowded and the rooms were a lot smaller than I had pictured. The many exhibits were interesting. Elvis sure made a lot of music. Beale Street was OK. I'm not really into the blues. Did find a pretty good Country trio. The lead singer sounded a lot like Johnny Cash. They did a lot of the old country songs. Food was great. I do like Nashville better. San Antonio was really great. Stayed on the riverwalk.

I've been to Memphis a few times and have always had a good time.... The tour of the house is tacky but it's pretty cool all at the same time... If you get to bored you can go down to Mississippi and gamble...

San Antone is great. Nashvegas is pretty good too. Never been to Memphis. Saw Elvis on a Venice Street once back in 1986...

Having worked with Northwest Airline crews in the past, they had 3 sayings about their airline hubs.

Snow-town = Minneapolis
Mo-town = Detroit
No-town = Memphis

That about sums it up.
