I just got a dvd with tv shows that Glen Campbell did in the mid 70's in England. In all the video of him during that time that I've seen, for his steel string acoustic, he's playing an acoustic only Legend, not his signature shallow bowl. He played this Legend until he went to Adamii in 1976.

Now what's interesting to me is that for all the push for a p/u for his guitars, this Legend (which is an A braced guitar -- long story there but trust me on this) had no p/u and is always mic'd. Evidently, the acoustic sound of it was that good.

Also, of interest, was that except for about 2 years where he played his signature model with a shallow bowl, he's played deep bowls pretty exclusively up until he started playing his Viper, about 5 years ago.

I've always found it intriguing too, Paul, that while his sig models were in production for approx 15 years, he really only used them during the run of the Goodtime Hour (which ran for about three years). I can't say that I blame him though, since those VT braced six strings tended to sound like, well... you know. Supposedly, the shallow bowl (aka artist bowl) was HIS idea, and yet he didn't give it much of an endorsement.

BTW, glad to hear you got the DVD and hope you had a great day yesterday! :)

Thanks Jeff.

The other thing I was thinking about is that Tony Calman has a very very early GC Artist, that I think was built before the VT bracing came to be. It has a great sound that comes from, I would guess, X bracing.

It would be interesting to play this guitar next to a new LX model. I'd bet that they sound very similar. Close to same depth bowl & X bracing.....

Wow, I'd love to hear/play that one! Didn't know there were any GC Artists with anything other than VT bracing until the 80s. Is that the one with the "winged" bridge?

Paul, I was told A brace and AAA spruce (Sn F161)...however, without taking off the strings, looked at Jerome's site...no bracing on tenor side of sound hole, etc. Maybe I'll have to bring up to NAMM for an "expert" to check out.

Maybe just me, but I prefer it over the Deluxe Balladeer (shiny bowl, 5pt bridge). Not much but there is a difference.

Tony, I can't believe that it would be an A braced top, but it might be. I thought that the A bracing came out on the Custom Legends, around 1974-5. Your guitar was probably built in 1969-70.

guess I'll have to get a mirror under it again when I change the strings...strange not having a brace on the tenor side of the soundhole unless it is up against the bowl
