I hope all are well and happy. Life is good, but challenging for me...

Anyway...

I was in Sam Ash last weekend checking out some acoustics for fun. Came across a Composite Acoustic "X" model, and was HUGELY surprised at the sound, and ESPECIALLY the bass response from such a thin guitar. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about these guitars...I never heard of them before. Rainsong was the only brand I knew that made this type of guitar.

Thanks...and be well!
Johnny

There's been some good chatter round here about them. More traditional "woody" tone ....

Johnny!! Good to hear from you. Not much to say on the CA thing, except that Glen Campbell played one (I think it was at somebody's funeral) and it sounded pretty good from what I could hear. Paul Hebert did a factory tour in Louisiana a year or two ago and gave a glowing report on both the company and the guitars.

All the best!

Bobbo, I think Campbell was playing a Rainsong at Ray Charles' funeral.

Hey Johnny... good to hear something from you.

As I have said here before I bought one used on ebay two months ago. It has become my main guitar. I consider it an innovative masterpiece. I know that sounds extreme, but I think it is justified. I just hope they don't price themselves out of the mainstream. I am not sure my opinions on this will be welcomed here, so I have started a Yahoo Group called caguitars. So far there is one post - mine - so I guess the fan base is not very large yet!!

Ray died in mid 2004. The X body came out at the end of that year. Glenn is playing their standard boxy dreadnaught. You can go online and see the styling of the X parlor. The cutaway is amazing in its styling that takes total advantage of composite materials. I sold my 97 collectors parlor the week after I bought the X. First I felt guilty having too many guitar and second I knew after playing the X, I would never play the 97 again. It is that good. I doubt that it would totally compete with a deep bowl adamas but for a parlor it is amazing.

Your going to judge the sound of a guitar by what it sounded like played at a funeral broadcast over the radio ???

My comment WAS that the guitar "sounded" like crap . . .

The broadcast was a live direct stereo feed.

One would assume that if a sound company was contracted to provide sound/radio feed for the funeral of Ray Charles, that the sound engineer would be somewhat "adept". I don't believe such was the case. The guitar sounded very cold, very "brittle" . . .

In the soundman's defense, I would assume his priorites were (because it's Ray Charles) keyboards & vocals, and that getting a natural acoustic guitar song (for just one song) was not high on his priority list.

There was a thread on the AcousticGuitar Board a month/two ago regarding all-carbonfibre guitars, RainSong, Emerald, CA, etc.
Y'might wanna check there.
General consensus seemed to be that the CA's sounded better than the RainSongs, and there were raves/jeers regarding the Emeralds . . .

I was watching a concert on VH1 (Heart, Alice in Chains, Dave Navarro) and saw Ann Wilson playing something similar to the one Glen has in the picture. I wondered what it was, but never remembered to look it up.

Hey Guys!

Thanks for the responses!

Like I said, I was really impressed with the X model, especially the full, rich sound from such a thin guitar. I also tried the full body CA version shown in the picture with Glenn, but it didn't sound that good to me, which was a mystery. The X model sounded REEALLY GOOD. It was at Manny's in NYC, and the sticker was 2,000+.

I've been really curious to try other guitars lately. I've loved my Ovations dearly, and haven't had much interest in trying anything else in the last few years. But lately I've just been strumming everything and anything in the stores $500+ just to see what's out there. I'm amazed how many horrible sounding acoustics there are with major name brands for $1500+. Most often the best sounding guitar in the store, to me, is the 'premium' model O they carry (usually a legend or custom legend).

This CA, though, impressed me A LOT. Never heard of them before though, so it's great to get the input. Thanks a bunch.

Good to be back in the neighborhood...missed you guys and hope you're all well. Best wishes for a fantastic New Year with many blessings, love, and happiness.

Be well,
Johnny

The owner of a local music store just bought all 6 of the Parlor guitars that Rainsong had left (they don't make them any more). They sell for $650, Carbon Fiber top, lam. rosewood back & sides. I play it every time I go in there. I go out of my way to go in and play it. I would never have the nerve, but I secretly want to trade my '97 for one. Regardless of the price...the sound is mezmerizing.

The other thing I notice with the X is that the undersaddle pickup really is awesome with the graphite top. Rainsong says in their literature that the graphite conducts? better. Don't know what is going on but it does shimmer electrically with the undersaddle, much more that the direct soundboard pickup, the IBEAM.
