I think the pickups seem hard to deal with but - any ideas would be welcome. I am having a hard time getting enough curve in the neck to stop the buzzing.

There is a neck angle adjustment on these that is often overlooked. If you remove the plastic neck plate cover, there is a hex head adjustment for setting the neck angle (must loosen neck bolts to affect a change). Unless the neck is shot, between neck angle, truss rod adjustment, bridge height and insuring the notches in the nut are not too worn, you should be able to get a nice action.
